Masters Intern - Energy & Emissions Analysis
Job Description
The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has one or more openings for a hourly graduate intern to work on multi-disciplinary research that advances fundamental understanding of coupled human and Earth systems and provides decision-relevant information for emerging global risks and opportunities.The team at JGCRI is a world leader in integrated analysis and employs the best available science to inform stakeholders on the implications of environment-energy-economy policies, energy R&D strategies and global perspectives of Human-Earth systems science. The successful candidate will support research at the intersection of energy, technology, climate, and policy.
This is an hourly appointment for currently enrolled masters graduate students. The intern will contribute to cutting edge interdisciplinary research in close collaboration with senior researchers at JGCRI and may have opportunities to coauthor scientific journal articles. The intern will contribute to analysis including development of the Community Emissions Data System (CEDS) historical emissions project and may also include work with analysis using JGCRI’s open-source human-Earth systems modeling framework, GCAM, which combines models of energy and the economy, land-use, agriculture, water, climate, air-pollution, and ecosystems.
JGCRI researchers publish their findings in leading scientific journals and work with US Federal agencies, state governments, industry, foundations, and universities. JGCRI researchers are leaders in the international and national climate and global change research communities through prominent roles in science-based assessments of energy and agricultural systems and water resources. The work environment at JGCRI is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, focused on solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges associated with energy, water and environment. Located in College Park, Maryland, JGCRI is a partnership between the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the University of Maryland at College Park.
Note that the JGCRI offices in College Park are closed as of January 2021 and on-boarding and work will be remote until the COVID19 situation allows a safe return to an office environment.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be matriculated/enrolled in a Master's program at an accredited college or university. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
Preferred Qualifications
The successful candidate must be currently enrolled in a Master’s program in public policy, engineering, economics, operations research, management science, computer science, or related field.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are necessary. Background in computer simulation modeling or related quantitative research is highly desirable. Research experience in the field of energy and environment, and some programming experience is a strong plus, as are understanding of engineering concepts related to energy systems. GPA of 3.5 or higher is preferred.
