Electrical Engineer Internship (Summer 2021)

Company Overview:
Hibbing Taconite is a leading iron ore mining company which began production in 1976 and has an annual plant capacity of 8.0 million tons of iron ore. ArcelorMittal, US Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs are partners in Hibbing Taconite, with ArcelorMittal owning a majority stake. ArcelorMittal is the managing agent.
Location Hibbing Taconite is located in Hibbing, MN on the Iron Range. We are located approximately 75 miles Northwest of Duluth, MN.
 Summary of Principal Functions: The Electrical Engineering Intern will be responsible for supporting the site Electrical Maintenance or Engineering department and completing several projects and initiatives. 
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Participate in Arc Flash Safety Program
  • Assist with the implementation and maintenance of Arc Flash Safety Program
  • Research and develop recommendations for Personal Protective Equipment based on results of Arc Flash study and industry best practices
  • Conduct power system load analysis
  • Develop detailed plans for Electrical Projects; including conductor and conduit sizing and routing, control schemes, and transformer and general equipment specification
  • Assist in development and implementation of training program for safety warnings and stickers
  • Conduct safety training on Safety Program
  • Assist with preventative maintenance of equipment
  • Assist with troubleshooting electrical issues as they arise
  • Work with Electricians and Electronic Repairmen to accomplish projects and initiatives
  • Participate in regular site Electrical Planning meetings and conference calls with site staff
  • Other duties as assigned by the Electrical Planning and Engineering staff
  • Past Project Example:
  • System development to track Medium Voltage Breaker spares and wear rates utilizing DCS and PI so that we can more effectively schedule preventative maintenance allowing more accurate budgeting as well as moving towards a maintenance program that is significantly more predictive.
Education Needed: Candidate must be enrolled in an accredited school or university and currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or other related field.
Experience Needed: No previous experience required. AutoCAD or Solidworks experience preferred.
