Mine Engineering Internship (Summer 2021)

Company Overview:
Hibbing Taconite is a leading iron ore mining company which began production in 1976 and has an annual plant capacity of 8.0 million tons of iron ore. ArcelorMittal, US Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs are partners in Hibbing Taconite, with ArcelorMittal owning a majority stake. ArcelorMittal is the managing agent.
Location Hibbing Taconite is located in Hibbing, MN on the Iron Range. We are located approximately 75 miles Northwest of Duluth, MN.
Position Summary:
Support the Mine Engineering department and complete several special projects and initiatives.
Sample Past Projects :
·       Participate in the design of the weekly, 30 day, 60 day, 90 day, and annual mine plans
·       Using data provided from the mine planning team and geological engineering team, design appropriate blast patterns for weekly dig plans
·       Obtain production data and track in mine plans
·       Conduct analysis of production data and present to operations and management staff
·       Maintain weekly mining plan
·       Use ground-based laser scanning tools to create topographical maps of mine pits
·       Conduct assessment of material moved using mine pit map updates
·       Use laser scanning tools to analyze blast swells
·       Make recommendations for future blast patterns
·       Participate in regular mine planning meetings with Engineering and site management
·       Other duties as assigned by the Mine Planning and Engineering staff
·       Past Project Examples:
o  Storm water runoff improvement design
o  Diamond drill core logging
o  Large chunk drilling and blasting in the mine
o  Data integrity verification
o  Justification of new equipment calculations
o  Sampling program oversight and administration
o  Short, mid, and long-range mine planning effort aid
o  Haulage infrastructure design
Education Requirements : Candidate must be enrolled in an accredited school or university and currently pursuing a degree in Mining, Mining Engineering, Mining Technology, Geotechnical, Civil, Geology, or other related degree
Experience Requirements No previous experience required, previous internship experience preferred
Competency Requirements :
·       Ability to work in various environments – rain, heat, humidity, etc.
·       Strong writing skills
·       Strong interpersonal communication skills
·       Well-developed, superb organizational skills
·       Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
·       Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook
·       Familiarity with Mining software a plus (Vulcan, MineSite, etc..)
·       Able to multi-task and set proper priorities
