Chemical/Metallurgical Internship (Summer 2021)

Company Overview:
Hibbing Taconite is a leading iron ore mining company which began production in 1976 and has an annual plant capacity of 8.0 million tons of iron ore. ArcelorMittal, US Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs are partners in Hibbing Taconite, with ArcelorMittal owning a majority stake. ArcelorMittal is the managing agent.
Location : Hibbing Taconite is located in Hibbing, MN on the Iron Range. We are located approximately 75 miles Northwest of Duluth, MN.
Summary of Principal Functions: The Process Engineering Intern will be responsible for supporting the site Process Engineering department and completing several special projects and initiatives. 
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Complete all tasks safely and in accordance with Cliffs Core Values
  • Development of plant sampling programs
  • Analysis of test data
  • Design, conduct and interpret laboratory scale experiments
  • Provide recommendations for continuous improvement to reduce operating costs and improve process performance
  • Participate in site meetings
  • Complete project reports
  • Other duties as assigned by staff
  • Past Project Examples:
  • Sampling and analysis of rougher tails
  • Sampling and analysis of finisher tails
  • Audit on balling drum for sizing, bentonite, etc.
  • Audit of roll screens and roll feeders
  • Furnace camera and atomizing air improvement assistance
  • DOE (Design of Experiments) on atomizing air project
  • DOE for new product testing program
  • Pilot plant and test plan for innovative water treatment process development
Education Needed: Candidate must be enrolled in an accredited school or university and currently pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or other related field.
Experience Needed: No previous experience required. Ability to perform mass and energy balance and understanding of statistics preferred.
