Accessioning Specialist II

Position Overview
The Biological Sample Management (BSM) group is responsible for sample accessioning, storing, retrieving, distribution, and disposition of samples which includes associated sample project management:
  • Initiation and building of the Project to guide the management of each sample, or batch of samples within the project, through the entire sample management lifecycle (i.e., receipt/expected receipt through disposition)
  • Receipt and Accessioning of samples against a pre-defined project (and ability to receive an “unknown” sample batch into the BSM LIMS),
  • Inventory management (freezer management) aspects of each physical sample through the entire sample management lifecycle,
  • Contiguous record of every system transaction relating to each managed sample, in order to evidence the entire Chain of Custody (COC),
  • Sample disposition (disposal, return, re-purpose), and
  • Residual sample volume management for test order re-queue and re-purposing.
Responsibilities
  • Create projects in BSM LIMS and other systems according to analytical plans or project requirements
  • Coordinate operational activities in the BSM laboratory, providing various support services to production lab, and others within the organization
  • Receive, Accession, and distribute customer sample information, ensuring completeness and accuracy
  • Check-in and check-out of biological samples to/from BSM to other in house labs
  • Draft or revise BSM SOPs to manage specimen intake, accessioning, tracking, sample distribution, and disposition according to applicable regulations and/or project analytical plans and project requirements.
  • Support development and implementation of BSM LIMS.
  • Track and monitor progression of samples from arrival in BSM lab through completion of project, ensuring timely processing of any pending project deadlines.
  • Enter, upload and ensure accuracy of information pertaining to samples and project through multiple systems.
  • Monitor and manage freezer inventory
  • Working closely with customer care, schedule and cull samples, returning when necessary.
  • Compile reports, status summaries and data at various stages of process.
  • Identify process interruptions, stalls and barriers and report out to staff and management for resolution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by BSM Program Manager.
Requirements 
  • BS/BA degree with advanced coursework in biology.
  • Minimum of two years experience working in a laboratory setting, regulated clinical lab preferred.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to follow GCLP/GMP.
  • Excellent problem solving skills and results-oriented balancing initiative.
  • Strong analytical and planning skills with keen attention to details and deadlines.
  • Proven critical thinking skills and the ability to identify and communicate issues while proposing possible resolutions.
  • The ability to be self-motivated and work independently, with minimal supervision, while also working as part of a team environment in a dynamic organization.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, and familiarity with use of web-based applications.
  • Previous work in a regulated clinical environment preferred.
  • Previous BSM LIMS experience highly desired. Experience with Salesforce, GenoLogics Clarity LIMS a plus.
