Director of Recreation Therapy

Resthaven seeks a full-time Director of Recreation Therapy to design, facilitate, and evaluate therapeutic recreational programs to meet the various interests and needs of our residents. Our ideal candidate will bring a positive, charismatic and professional personality to all aspects of recreation therapy while providing opportunities for residents to experience therapeutic, educational, and social activities within their own abilities on a daily basis. This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy or Therapeutic Recreation and a certification as a CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist). Experience with special populations is required along with practical experience working with seniors and experience working in long term care preferred.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develop, direct, plan and organize an ongoing program of group, independent, and one-to-one activities for residents in the facility, while supervising life enrichment staff members and volunteers.
  • Provide clinical services (i.e. assessment, group programs, one to one treatments, community outings).
  • Responsible for ensuring and implementing effective leisure adaptations to meet individual resident needs.
  • Assure the preparation of a monthly and annual activity calendar.
  • Plan and maintain department budget, assuring budgetary compliance.
  • Maintain Recreation Therapy documentation (i.e. assessment, progress notes, minimum data sets (MDS), resident assessment protocols (RAPS), care plans, discharge summaries, treatment notes, daily charting).
  • Integrate resident activities with other disciplines including rehabilitation to add to resident’s quality of life.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of recommendations and implementations of treatment based on information gathered (MDS).
  • Evaluate care plans for residents and participate in care conferences.
  • Coordinate and maintain resident / family relations and support groups including resident and family councils.
  • Develop short and long term departmental goals and objectives based on the philosophy and goals of Resthaven.
  • Advocate for residents right to leisure/recreation, and the maintenance/improvement of functional abilities through programming.
  • Assist in daily functions of department such as ordering and purchasing supplies, inventory, cleaning.

Primary Essential Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy or Therapeutic Recreation. Certification as a CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, or eligible to take the exam.
  • Experience with special populations required. Practical experience working with seniors and experience working in long term care preferred. Possess basic knowledge of health care and medical issues, as well as disabilities and diagnoses.
  • Ability to supervise other RT staff, volunteers and/or clergy.
  • Displays flexibility, integrity and the ability to work effectively with residents, staff, families, visitors, volunteers, community members and organizations.
  • Leadership and organizational skills, including the ability to facilitate and lead group programs and activities.
