Biomonitoring Clinic & Recruitment Technician-State of Michigan-Div Env. Health

Purpose: This position provides administrative, coordination, and outreach support for environmental exposure assessments and surveillance programs to the Biomonitoring and Environmental Epidemiology Unit within the Division of Environmental Health at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Data entry and data verification.
  • Organization of electronic and hard copy project information and documentation.
  • Making and answering phone calls to recuit participants into environmental health studies.
  • Assist with community outreach and staffing study promotion events; travel required.
  • Preparing mailings, including functions such as merging Microsoft Excel data into Word documents.
  • Providing technical support in the formatting and maintenance of Microsoft Excel and Word documents.
  • Produces documentation necessary for grant proposals, public meetings, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Providing technical support for arranging internal and external meetings.
  • General technical duties as needed.
  • Provide additional support to the Division of Environmental Health as requested.
  • Represent the best interest of MDHHS and MPHI at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications/Requirements:
 
Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher in any field.  A bachelor’s degree in a physical, environmental, or social science is preferred.
 
Experience: One or more years of experience supporting research in a clinical or academic setting. Data management experience is a plus, especially in REDCap and Microsoft Access.
 
Required Skills and Characteristics:
  • Proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Work, Power Point) and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Microsoft Word mail merge experience.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete assigned tasks in an accurate and efficient manner.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with others in a team environment.
  • Motivation to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work under stress and handle changing priorities.
  • Ability to communicate with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Willingness to learn scientific terminology and concepts.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of data as required by state and federal laws.
 
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Physical requirements consistent with a standard office environment. Regular evening and weekend hours will be required in this position. Transport supplies to sites around the state on an occasional basis. Items and supplies can be bulky and weigh up to 40lbs. May occasionally go door-to-door to engage residents and may be exposed to cold or wet weather conditions. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license and occasional travel within the State, including occasional overnights or weekends. Less occasionally, travel may be required outside the State.
 
Responsibility for the Work of Others: No assigned responsibilities.
 
Impact on Projects, Services, and Operations: The Section’s primary function is to prevent and mitigate human health exposures to chemical contaminants in the general public. The section collaborates with multiple federal agencies, agencies in other state governments, other State of Michigan departments, and local health departments. The Section also provides education and outreach for a variety of health topics including fish consumption, mercury, mold, as well as human exposures to chemical contaminants in the air, water, and soil.
