Waterfowl and Wetland Technicians

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking two (2) Wildlife Technicians in Southeast Wyoming. These wildlife technicians will capture, handle, and band ducks and mourning doves in Southeastern Wyoming during July-September 2020. Additional tasks will include habitat assessment and opportunities to assist with other Department efforts, including Trumpeter Swan and Sandhill Crane projects. Technicians will be stationed in the Yoder area but may have extended travel in other areas of the state.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

 
  • Duck Banding –Identify trap locations, set and maintain live capture traps; identify species, sex, and age of all ducks caught; affix USGS leg bands.
  • Dove Banding –Set and maintain live capture traps on Department-owned property; identify sex and age of all doves caught; affix USGS leg bands.
  • Habitat Assessment- Conduct monitoring of habitat projects across Wyoming using photo points and vegetation assessment protocols.
  • Reports – Maintain accurate banding data records on standard forms; complete year-end reports.
  • Predator Removal – Use conibear traps to manage predation issues.

 
QUALIFICATIONS:
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: 


Preference will be given to applicants who are working toward or have obtained a bachelor's degree in wildlife management, ecology, biology, zoology or a closely related field.
Preference will be given to applicants with prior duck banding and wetland habitat experience.
**Agency requires that the successful applicant possess a valid driver's license.


KNOWLEDGE: 

 
  • Knowledge of banding methods and experience banding ducks.
  • Knowledge of waterfowl species, sex, and age identification.
  • Knowledge of wetland plant identification and experience conducting habitat assessments.
  • Self-starter able to work with little direct supervision.
  • Must be able to effectively and safely operate trucks, trailers, and ATVs, including hauling a camper.
  • Skill in planning, prioritizing, and managing time.
  • Ability to listen, be a team player and communicate with other employees and the public.
  • Skill in the use of GPS units and Google Drive.

 NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

 
  • Excellent physical condition and ability to perform under adverse climatic working conditions and difficult terrain.
  • Weekend work will be required.
  • Long and irregular work hours will be required.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • The two (2) technicians will work as a team and without direct supervision for extended periods.

  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Housing will be provided.
  • Duration of employment: July 15, 2020 - September 15, 2020.
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment.
