Wildlife Technician

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Wildlife Technician in Pinedale, WY. This position assists department personnel in wildlife damage control, wildlife damage claim investigations, wildlife conflict resolution, wildlife data collection, wildlife disease surveillance, vegetation monitoring, and sports person/public relations in accordance with Department policy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

 
  • Assists regional personnel with limiting depredation by big game, game birds, and trophy game animals to crops and livestock.
  • Assists regional personnel with wildlife conflict situations in urban and rural settings in an appropriate manner.
  • Communicates with homeowners and provide information regarding wildlife conflict situations.
  • Conducts vegetation monitoring on select sites to evaluate long-term vegetation and habitat objectives.
  • Assists with the collection of biological data and observations during wildlife and habitat surveys.
  • Assists regional personnel with elk feed grounds operations.
  • Collects tissues and records data from harvested deer, elk, and moose for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) diagnostics.
  • Contact hunters in the field and at check stations and records harvest information (e.g., species, age, and sex).
  • Works during the day or night, and on weekends, with an irregular work schedule.
  • Accomplishes other duties as assigned.

 QUALIFICATIONS:
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: 


Preference will be given to those with a four-year college degree in wildlife management, range management, or other natural resource fields. Other related training and experience will be evaluated.

**Must have a valid driver's license.


KNOWLEDGE: 
 
  • Skill in the safe use of handguns, shotguns, rifles, and pyrotechnical devices.
  • Skill in interpersonal communication with employees, landowners, and the general public.
  • Ability to record and manage collected data.
  • Possesses an understanding of ecosystem function and can identify plants in western Wyoming.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to be self-directed.
  • Ability to operate four-wheel-drive truck/trailers, ATVs, and snow machines.
  • General knowledge of wildlife, anatomy.
  • Ability to understand CWD and its distribution in Wyoming.
  • Ability to navigate using GPS and maps.

 NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
 
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Ability to walk in rough, uneven terrain with unstable footing.


NOTES: 
 
  • FLSA: Non-Exempt
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment.
  • The tentative starting date is early May, anticipated to last through March 2021.
