Special Education Teacher

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
·        Provide evidence-based assessment, instruction and interventions that are matched to student needs using data-driven instructional decision-making, problem solving and progress monitoring to positively impact student growth and achievement.
·        Develop courses and deliver daily instruction to students aligned to Common Core standards.
·        Implement individualized education plans for students
·        Maintain attendance records and other data, records and reports as required
·        Adhere to the policies and procedures of Maple Valley Schools
·        Establish and maintain constructive professional relationships with the school staff and parents/guardians.
·        Maintain classroom area and furnishings in appropriate condition
·        Maintain, store, utilize and protect records according to law and Maple Valley District policies
·        Request equipment and supplies as needed
·        Work cooperatively with assigned paraprofessional(s)
·        Adhere to the school schedule and calendar
·        Attend and participate in all scheduled meetings
·        Provide assistance to substitute teaching personnel as needed
·        Maintain a current level of knowledge regarding special education federal regulations, state law and current procedures.
·        Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICIATIONS
 
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Required
·        Valid Michigan teaching certificate with Special education K-12 endorsement (LD or CI preferred)

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
Required
·        Bachelor’s degree in education or a related discipline
·        Able to be Highly Qualified in AT LEAST one Michigan core content area.
    Desired
·        Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification
·        CPR/First Aid certification
·        Reading endorsement or trained in reading instruction
·        One (1) or more years of teaching experience at the Middle/High school level
·        One (1) or more years of experience in IEP’s and goal writing
·        One (1) or more years of experience in differentiating instruction, including multiple grade levels.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
·        Knowledge of commonly used approached to educating at-risk students
·        Skill with use of technology to implement work responsibilities
·        Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences both orally and in writing
·        Ability to develop and implement curriculum for students
·        Ability to develop and implement behavior intervention systems and individual student plans
·        Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality in dealing with staff, students and operations.
·        Ability to work independently and within teams to accomplish identified goals and strategies.
·        Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with general education teachers, related service staff, paraprofessionals and community partners.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
·        Position requires regular and predictable attendance at the workplace.
·        Position requires the employee to provide his/her own transportation for job related travel.
