Seasonal Conservation Educator

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking four (4) Seasonal Conservation Educators based out of Cheyenne or Laramie, WY. The Conservation Educators will assist in outreach and education efforts by leading three conservation day-camps in various locations throughout the state of Wyoming, four week-long overnight youth camps and one family camp at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp (WMCC) near Dubois, as well as assisting in other conservation education programming providing the public with information about wildlife, fisheries, habitat management, ecology, hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreation skills.

This position involves statewide travel throughout the duration of the contract. Housing is provided in the form of a camper trailer when traveling the state based out of Laramie, and cabin space at the WMCC in Dubois.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

 
  • Delivering high-quality, engaging programming to youth and family groups.
  • Maintaining a collection of education materials. 
  • Co-leading safe, engaging and fun three-day day camp experiences for 5-6th grade students.
  • Co-leading safe, engaging and fun five-day overnight camp experiences for 7th-10th grade students.
  • Informing and educating the public about conservation and the Wyoming Game and Fish mission.
  • Assisting with routine clean up and set up of program areas.
  • Sharing a passion and knowledge of Wyoming's abundant wildlife, recreational opportunities, and rich natural history.

 
QUALIFICATIONS:
PREFERENCES: 


Preference will be given to those working towards or have a bachelor's degree in education, wildlife/fisheries biology, biological sciences, environmental science, ecology, or related field.

Preference will be given to those who have experience working with students in middle and high school.

Preference will be given to those who have experience safely supervising students in an outdoor education environment.

Preference will be given to those who have knowledge of a variety of outdoor skills including: orienteering, first aid, fishing, archery, wildlife ecology, and outdoor recreation. Wilderness first aid is a plus.


KNOWLEDGE:

 
  • Must be able to work well independently with minimal supervision, as well as able to work well with others on a team.
  • Requires flexible schedule including travel and long days, working evenings and weekends.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with all ages and backgrounds.
  • Must have the ability to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions, and be comfortable pulling trailers and operating 4WD vehicles.
  • Must be able to responsibly maintain direct supervision of children while involved with activities such as fishing, archery, long hikes, outdoor science investigations, and team builders.
  • Knowledge of regional ecology and wildlife, in addition to experience with archery, fishing, navigation, first aid, canoeing, and other outdoor recreation skills.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, strong organizational and leadership skills, enthusiasm, flexibility, and a passion for working with students.
  • Must demonstrate teaching skills and the ability to implement creative "hands on" teaching methods.
  • Must demonstrate flexible, creative, positive attitude & exceptional communication skills.

 NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

 
  • Occasional weekend and holiday work will be required.
  • Position requires extended stays (4 days) in a shared camper trailer with coworkers, statewide travel, and five weeks based at a remote summer camp near Dubois, WY.


NOTES:

 
  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • All new hires or rehires starting in a non-exempt position on or after January 1, 2018 are required to be paid hourly.
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment.
  • CPR Certification required and provided by WGFD, 
  • Starting date is May 18, 2020.
  • Tentative ending date is August 7, 2020.
  • Uniform and other necessary gear will be provided when in the field.
  • Department housing is provided. (Camper trailer in Laramie/ cabin space at WMCC)
