English as a Second Language K-12 Teacher

Notice is hereby given that the following position is available in the Harper Creek Community School District, Battle Creek, Michigan.

POSITION:                            English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher
                                                     Requires ESL Certification/Endorsement

LOCATION:                          District

SUMMARY:                           Provide English language development support to students who qualify as ESL students within the District. Provide educational and social/emotional support to ESL students and their families. Provide support to general education classroom teachers in methods and processes that will help ESL students learn content in the classroom.

RESPONSIBILITIES:         Provide English language instruction to ESL students. Provide academic support to ESL students. Evaluate students’ academic and social growth. Prepare progress reports to coincide with building report cards. Meet with staff members and administrators connected with the education of ESL students in their classrooms to access collaboratively the students’ academic/curricular needs. Develop a plan for working with individual students based on data collected at the meeting. Act as a liaison between the students and other teachers, staff members and family. Attends parent/teacher conferences. Work with Curriculum Department to maintain a list of students receiving ELS support services, progress monitoring, and state assessment needs. Implement assessments mandated by law (WIDA test and WIDA screener). Participate in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned. Attend IEP, Section 504 or other related meetings as necessary for student assessment and/or compliance with federal and/or state law. Other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:              Must have Valid State of Michigan Elementary or Secondary Teaching Certificate with an ESL Endorsement. Must have a minimum of three years of successful classroom teaching experience including experience as an ESL teacher or in a related field. Must have demonstrated ability to use data in making instructional decisions; an understanding of core curriculum, effective instructional strategies, formative and summative assessment. Must have experience working with students using multicultural strategies in creating connections with school.
