Transportation Planner

Nature of Work
Mobile GR and Parking Services (Mobile GR) is the consolidated transportation department for City of Grand Rapids – encompassing traffic safety, signals, signs, public parking and transportation policy and planning. Situated in one of the top 25 fastest growing cities in the U.S., Mobile GR is actively testing ways to improve multi-modal transportation to meet needs for equity, environment and quality of life. This includes pilots in active transportation, traffic calming, a recently passed Bicycle Action Plan, close coordination with the regional transit provider (The Rapid) and emerging Transportation Demand Management work. Essential Duties & Responsibilities 
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
  • Assists with GIS analysis, transportation project analysis, transportation project prioritization, sub-area studies, and planning activities.
  • Conducts key components of planning audits and studies for roadway, transit, bicycle, pedestrian, and other investments; participates in the coordination of consultant studies related to transportation planning projects. 
  • Researches, collects, and analyzes data in preparation of solutions to specific transportation planning and demand issues dictated by community needs. 
  • Develops and implements reliable technical tools based on industry best practice. 
  • Prepares informational materials, presentations, and reports; develops reports or information to assist the Department. 
  • Works directly with internal and external partners to develop transportation planning projects, project development, project review, cost estimates and submittal. 
  • Assists in the formulation and implementation of department policies, initiatives, and budgetary matters; meets with department heads and other city staff; provides follow through action on initiatives; serves as liaison with assigned departments and agencies. 
  • Assists in presenting Department activities and matters to the Mobile GR Commission and other public bodies.

Required Education and Experience
  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university in urban & regional planning, urban design, transportation engineering, public administration or a closely related field. Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience related to planning, design, construction, and measurement
  • Any equivalent combination of training


Required Licenses or Certifications
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Michigan driver's license
