Warehouse/Pick Pack Manager

We are a mid-size family-owned used bookstore specializing in K-12 textbooks since 2008, located in Tempe near Southern and Hardy. We need managers to come in and become leaders in our warehouse in a variety of areas. Our work is concentrated such that 80% of our labor time and profit are concentrated in the months of June-August. This position thus manages a very seasonal business where sometimes there are 6 employees to do all available tasks, and other times there are 40. Thus, sometimes the manager has to step into the role of employee when there is not enough staff. We want someone who can grow and maintain our team, despite the fact that each summer we often have a brand new staff of students to train who then leave in August. 

Job Description and Details
·        Manage all aspects of an industrial-sized used bookstore:
o  picking up box trucks of material loose from customers
o  unloading semis of material delivered to our shop
o  sorting and processing of value books from non-value books
o  conditioning value books and ensuring they are correctly inputted into inventory
o  processing incoming orders and assuring most effective shipping methods
·        Lead teams of 3-30 employees in sometimes adverse conditions.
·        Maintain appropriate quality control procedures to check accuracy of employee work and evaluate effectiveness of training.
·        Anticipate and adjust to logistical and staffing needs throughout the day and year.
·        Adjust to operational demands of various parts of the business.
·        See and anticipate pinch points in the work process and adjust staffing to avoid pinch points.
·        Create and maintain a positive, upbeat, encouraging, motivating, and cohesive culture of hard work, high accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail among both long-term and short-term seasonal (college student) staff.
·        Encourage effective, appropriate and positive communication among employees.
·        Effectively train and supervise new employees or oversee training and evaluation of training.
·        Ensure materials needed for success are in appropriate supply at all times.
·        Perform detailed administrative tasks on the computer for tracking of inventory, incoming and outgoing shipments, etc. as needed.

Necessary Qualifications and Desired Traits
·        Bachelor’s Degree preferred. 
·        Strong mathematical abilities. (This is tested pre-hire.)
·        Willingness and ability to work 50 to 70 hours a week with very limited or no vacation time from May 1 to September 30th (80% of our business is in this time frame). 
·        Flexible and versatile, able to do varying tasks throughout days and weeks.
·        Detail oriented.
·        Self-motivated, fast learner.
·        Desire and willingness to learn.
·        Able to switch between a variety of tasks as needed.
·        Keep and maintain accountability for materials and equipment.
·        Strong critical thinking skills.
·        Be willing to show how to work by doing the work alongside staff, and be willing to do all jobs they are expected to do.
·        Be willing to be humble enough to ask appropriate questions as situations occur. We do not have black and white rules for everything.
·        Have genuine interest in the welfare of the entire organization, including employee welfare and company profit levels.
·        Be able to change work direction or work team allocation mid-task at a moments notice.
·        Ability to lift and move 40-80 pound boxes of books repeatedly on a daily basis, stoop, stand, and climb up and down ladders and stairs, both in our air conditioned warehouse and outside in sometimes adverse/hot conditions.
·        Operate forklift.
·        Drive 26’ box truck, reasonably clean driving record.
·        Ability to pass pre-employment and regular unannounced drug tests.

Salary and Benefits
·        Pay is $24/hour and up depending on experience (includes mandatory 10-20 hours per week of overtime in the summer)
·        Health insurance available first of the month after 60 days of employment, we pay 50% of employee and dependents.
·        Employee-sponsored IRA after making at least $5000 in each of 2 calendar years.
·        More flexible work schedule and extra time off available in winter (October-April) to make up for longer hours in the summer months.
