Environmental Advocate (Paid Internship) - Clean Water Action

Clean Water Action is an organization with 250,000 members in Michigan working to empower people to take action to protect America's waters, build healthy communities and to make democracy work for all of us. For over 45 years Clean Water Action has succeeded in winning some of the nation's most important environmental protections through grassroots organizing, expert policy research and political advocacy focused on holding elected officials accountable to the public. We focus on campaigns related to water access, water quality, and environmental justice. In Michigan, we have won campaigns to increase renewable energy, fight water withdrawals from the Great Lakes, and to fund lead pipe replacement in the city of Flint, MI.

Due to a serious lack of leadership in Lansing over the past number of years, communities across Michigan are currently being forced to tackle major water issues alone. We face the threat of an oil spill from Line 5 in the heart of the Great Lakes, lead contamination in our drinking water, and are the only state without a statewide septic code to control sewage runoff.  Our current work focuses on mobilizing community members across the state to hold elected officials in Lansing accountable and to ensure that they will prioritize protecting our Great Lakes and drinking water.

Responsibilities of internships include:
  • Identifying voters and volunteers who will work with us to hold politicians accountable for their votes on environmental and health related issues
  • Ensuring, by grassroots organizing, fundraising, and education, that communities are made aware of these issues
  • Participating in press conferences, lobby days, and other events.

We look for candidates who have strong oral and written communication skills, and who possess good attention to detail. Candidates should have an interest in environmental or social justice issues, non-profit work, or politics. We do provide extensive training on our issues.
Hours for the work would be at least 3 days a week between Monday and Friday, working from 2pm to 10:30pm.  On Mondays and Wednesdays, there is also the option to work a shortened schedule from 3:30pm to 10pm.  This option is only available to current students who cannot work the regular schedule.  Pay is $90 - 115 per day for the 8 hours schedule and starts at $70/day for the shortened schedule. Internships can be used for class credit as well, depending on the requirements of the class.
