Nature of Work
The University of Colorado, Department of Medicine’s Division of Biomedical Informatics and Personalized Medicine (BIPM) has an opening for a part time or full-time position for a student lab worker in the Genetic Epidemiology laboratory. Under the direction and guidance of the Lab Manager, Ms. Monica Campbell, this part-time, position exists to support the research work of Dr. Kathleen C. Barnes. The lab focuses on the genetic basis for acute and chronic airway disease and is based on family-based and independent population with many populations of African descent (African Caribbean, South American, Western European, and local African American Populations). The specific research interest involves epidemiology of complex lung diseases and diseases of allergy and inflammation. Current studies are focused on gene-interactions and the interface of innate and adaptive immunity in the immune-genetics of various lung diseases including asthma, acute lung injury, atopic dermatitis and schistosomiasis. We are located at the University of Colorado Anschutz campus and are looking for a professional technician that shares our core values of team work, self-awareness, motivation to excel, creativity and interconnectedness.

Professional Research Assistant, Genetic Epidemiology Laboratory

The student will be responsible for oversight of sample preparation procedures in the research Lab. S/he will participate in and operate under Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) as they relate to procedures and methodologies for sample preparation. Additionally, s/he will perform all procedures on samples as they are received in the Laboratory to ensure sample integrity and assurance

Examples of Work Performed

·        The candidate will provides ongoing oversight for all biospecimen preparation (Blood, Buffy Coats, WBC’s, Plasma, Serum, DNA, RNA) procedures included but not limited to samples inventory, cataloging and uploading into our Biotracking system.
·        Helps Maintains adequate supply of reagents, supplies and sample preparation kits.
·        Maintains detailed record of all samples prepared and records all data related to preparation protocols.
·        Performs Quality analytics on extracted DNA aliquots using applied methodologies and platforms e.g. UV spectrophotometry to determine sample yield, concentration and purity (on Nanodrop, Multi Plate Reader Flouresecence, and XPS Gemini Pico Green).
·        Performs aliquoting procedures on specified samples to produce sample aliquots that are volumetric or normalized (DNA,Serum and Plasma)
·        *Utilizes appropriate procedures to register and place prepared samples into sample management database and location in freezer.
·        Communicates in a timely manner with Laboratory Manager, and operations staff
·        Performs other related duties and tasks as necessary or as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 
This entry level student will spend the majority of his/her time performing standard laboratory tasks and molecular biology techniques across the human discipline. These disciplines include but are not limited to sample quality control and documentation; general lab inventory, organization and replenishment (procure new supplies). The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding of Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or Biology skills. He /She must have excellent attention to details, strong planning and problem solving skills. He/ She must have excellent organizational and time management, communication, multitasking, interpersonal and listening skills. He/ She must be self-motivating and have the ability to work well independently as well as using a collaborative team approach and be able to adhere to established timelines, processes and procedures. They must have basic experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, and database software.
