Senior Psychiatric Social Worker

Hennepin County's Public Health Clinical Services Division is seeking a Senior Psychiatric Social Worker. This position provides the opportunity to make a difference in diverse communities, enhance your clinical skills in a fast-paced, team environment, and be part of a department with the mission to strengthen communities by improving the health of individuals and families.

This position will respond to crisis calls involving adults, adolescents, children, and/or families by providing crisis assessments and therapeutic interventions in a client's home or community setting.

Location and hours:
The Mental Health Mobile Crisis program operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Hours to be determined. Shifts could include days, evening, overnight, and some holidays.

In this position, you will:
  • Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary mobile crisis response team.
  • Conduct initial mental health screening of clients in crisis via phone.
  • Conduct mental health and risk assessments of adults, adolescents, and children in a mental health crisis in the home or community setting in order to determine their needs.
  • Complete mental status examinations and develop provisional diagnoses to be used during crisis interventions; develop short term intervention goals and plans.
  • Record notes and data pertaining to client progress; write comprehensive reports of client histories, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations into an electronic medical record.
Need to have:
  • Master's degree or higher in social work or closely related field and two or more years of post-master's degree experience in a psychiatric or mental health setting.
  • Qualification as a Mental Health Professional or ability to qualify within one year of hire.
  • A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation to visit community sites throughout Hennepin County.

  • Experience:
  • Providing therapy or crisis services to adults, adolescents, children, and/or their families in their home or other community setting.
  • Conducting mental health screenings.
  • Handling mental health crisis, including diagnosis and treatment of clients in crisis.
  • Knowledge of:
  • County and community resources.
  • Cultural differences in beliefs and practices relating to mental health, treatment, family structure, and dynamics.
  • Ability to:
  • Function well in unpredictable and challenging situations calling for sensitivity, flexibility, resourcefulness, and independent judgment.
  • Effectively interact with people from diverse backgrounds and/or historically underserved populations; bilingual skills preferred.
  • Work well in a group setting.
  • Strong therapeutic intervention skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
