Accounting Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for supervising and directing Credit Union accounting function’s including general ledger, fixed assets, prepaids and other subsidiary ledger accounting. Prepares periodic reports, reviews and reconciles data, and participates in the development of specialized financial data. Ensures the accurate internal and external recording and reporting of financial transactions to state and federal regulatory agencies. Oversees and prepares entries and adjustments to Credit Union records, files, and statements. Ensure that reports, accounts, systems, policies and practices adhere to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Directs, trains, supervises and appraises accounting personnel.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
  • Ensure that accounting functions and duties of the Bookkeeper 1 and 2 are accurately and promptly completed. Assist and train Bookeeper 1 and 2 and serve as backup as needed.
  • Manage accounting functions to include AP, AR, financial analysis, financial reporting and recordkeeping, and General Ledger. Research and resolve accounting errors and discrepancies.
  • Prepare journal entries in the more complicated accounting areas. Assist V.P. of Finance in end-of-month close and producing monthly financial statements. 
  • Oversee the preparation of regulatory and governmental reports. Review financial information needed to ensure an accurate statement of the Credit Union’s financial position to various regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure that all activities of the department are in accordance with GAAP and that the accounting records are maintained accurately and in compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Reconcile Corporate Bank accounts and post journal entries for daily settlement activity.
  • Supervise and maintain the credit union’s fixed asset portfolio. Prepare depreciation schedules and catalogs furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Perform monthly IRA and Dividend Backup Withholding reconciliations. File monthly IRA and Backup Withholding form and make deposit in accordance with government regulations. File annual 945 return.
  • Develop and implement processes to streamline credit union accounting procedures and insure that policies and procedures reflect current regulations, are communicated to and implemented by subordinates.
  • Provide regular reports to the V.P. of Finance of all online accounting activities for the credit union’s accounting/bookkeeping department.
  • Conduct special accounting studies, analyses and special projects as requested by management.
  • Provide leadership to accounting personnel though effective objective setting, delegation and communication. Maintain and prepare work schedules and assignments to ensure proper servicing of members at all times. Conducts meetings, trains and directs accounting staff, provides support as needed. Conducts performance appraisals and formulates and implements corrective actions as needed.
  • Respond to questions and problems politely and promptly.
  • Assist the V.P. of Finance in maintaining investment portfolios.
  • Keep V.P. of Finance informed of department’s activities, needs and problems. Maintain regular contact with other departments to obtain information and/or to correct transactions.
  • Stay informed on developments in the accounting field and of changing governmental and legal requirements.
  • Ensure that positive business relations exist with business contacts, auditors, government officials, and trade professionals.
  • Ensure that good coordination and effective working relations exist with other departments and that assistance is provided as needed.
  • Ensure that accounting records and documentation are maintained in accordance with credit union’s Record Preservation Policy.
  • Ensure that work area is clean, secure and well maintained.
  • All other duties as assigned.
