POSITION SUMMARY
 
Under the general supervision of the Chief Planning Officer, the Grant Writer assists the Chief Planning Officer in performing the goals and functions of community planning for the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi. The Grant Writer is responsible for all facets of grants including: researching grant opportunities, preparing grant proposals, and performing grants management of awarded grants. Furthermore, the Grant Writer is responsible for maintaining current needs-based demographic and department specific data including NHBP Census data and outside local, state, and national data.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi reserves the right to change, amend, add, delete and otherwise assign any and all duties, responsibilities, and positions titles as it deems necessary to meet the needs of the government.
 
  1. Responsible for conducting the full range of grant writing responsibilities including, but not limited to: research potential funding opportunities in local, state, and national sectors: write competitive proposals in response to RFP’s; manage and evaluate grant post grant award.
  2. Responsible for conducting the full range of preparing contract renewal documents relative to formula-based federal and state contracts.
  3. Works with the NHBP staff to prepare required grant reporting.
  4. Performs internal grant evaluations through continuous data collection and collection of narrative reporting from NHBP staff
  5. Continuously monitors and prepares funding summaries of local, state, and national programs.
  6. Works in concert with the Chief Planning Officer in preparing grant proposals and presenting materials for Committee and Tribal Council
  7. Maintains current grant records in electronic and paper file format.
  8. Prepares annual Fund Development Plans that align with the NHBP Tribal strategic goals.
  9. Researches, gathers, and analyzes census, demographic, and other applicable data in order to assist in identifying the NHBP department needs and evaluate and/or support proposed projects or programs. 
  10. Coordinates with the NHBP staff on funding sources and grant development initiatives.
  11. May be assigned to represent the NHBP at conferences, meetings, or give speeches as necessary; provides support to committees as requested; attends Tribal Council meetings as directed.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
An applicant’s education, training and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the ability to successfully perform each of the essential functions. The requirements listed below are generally representative of the education, experience, and skills and/or ability required to enable one to successfully perform the essential functions associate with his position:
 
  1. Bachelor’s degree in business administration or closely related field and at least three years combination of experience in development and management of federal grants or equivalent experience.
  2. Must have demonstrated experience as a grant writer.
  3. Ability to understand, gain knowledge and appreciate the differences with the Native American culture and customs.
  4. Must maintain a valid driver’s license with good driving record; GSA certifiable.
  5. Must be able to travel.
  6. Must be able to successfully complete and pass a comprehensive background investigation and drug screening.
  7. Ability to interpret Tribal laws, rules and regulations relative to the department.
  8. Demonstrated  skill  in  preparing  competitive  grant  proposals  to  the  federal government.
  9. Provide two grant proposals in which the applicant was the lead writer. (required to be submitted when applying)
  10. Ability to learn and understand the NHBP grants and federal government contracts.
  11. Ability to work well independently and with team members and other staff in a team- oriented environment.
  12. A willingness to initiate contacts with new people.
  13. Ability to comprehend and abide by Tribal, federal and other relevant environmental regulations/codes.
  14. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  15. Must be able to adjust schedule as needed or required.

  18. Ability to read and interpret documents.
  19. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft; Word, Excel, Access and other software

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
 
  1. Bachelor’s degree in urban studies/planning, business administration, public administration, or closely related field.
  2. Five years of experience in development and management of federal grants.
  3. Certifications in grant writing and/or grant evaluation.
  4. Experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the NHBP.
 
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Ability to develop formulas in Microsoft Excel.
 
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Incumbent will work under standard office conditions as well as extended periods of computer work including periodic times in which late hours are required to achieve a grant deadline.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to focus on computer screens for extensive periods of time.
 
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to sometimes very loud.
