Scientific Support Unit Team Leader (Crime Scene Investigator)


This is a highly skilled forensic position with responsibility for direct supervision of the staff of the Scientific Support Unit of the Kent County Sheriff’s Department. Will train staff, assign scientific support specialists to specific cases, review methodology and reports, and evaluate work performance of subordinate staff. Will also develop, document, implement, update and monitor staff compliance with technical procedures and protocols to ensure the unit is technically sound and legally compliant.

The successful candidate will be able to perform all functions of a Scientific Support Unit Specialist. Will participate in a leadership role at major crime scenes, act as the primary forensic contact for other agencies that receive contracted crime scene services from the Kent County Sheriff Department and manage the deliverables and billing for those accounts. 

The candidate must be able to work any or all shifts and schedules as necessary to provide proper coverage for all incidents. Must be available to be effectively on call and responsible for the Scientific Support Unit, consistent with managing a unit that functions 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

The successful candidate will be subjected to a thorough background investigation, including a drug test.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physics, Medical Technology, Forensic Anthropology, Engineering, or a similar science degree combined with four years progressively responsible experience in evidence collection and field work, including crime scene investigation and laboratory analysis, and experience in supervision and training. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Must possess knowledge of federal, state, county and local statutes, ordinances, rules and regulations governing the collection and admissibility of evidence. Computer literacy including spreadsheet, database, graphics, CAD and digital photography software applications, as well as experience in flowcharting are essential. 

Requires thorough knowledge and prior experience with processing crime scenes. Must also possess thorough working knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and procedures, and OSHA/MIOSHA rules, regulations and requirements, as well as working knowledge of accepted principles and practices of forensic science. Requires good documentation, supervisory and organizational skills, along with good oral and written communication skills.
