Diagnostic Lab/Research Internship

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join the Diagnostic Lab for the summer! You’ll assist us with unpacking and checking in samples, processing samples for testing (serological and molecular), and collecting and organizing data! You should have a strong understanding of scientific principles and lab techniques. During this internship you will learn about plant problem diagnosis, various testing methods, working with a team, arboriculture, and much more!
 
This job description is for a summer intern at the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory in Charlotte, NC. The intern will work with the diagnostic team in the Diagnostic Laboratory to complete various lab tasks for approximately 75% of the time. The remaining 25% of the intern’s time will be spend helping with various research projects being conducted by the research staff.

DIAGNOSTIC LAB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reports for duty at the laboratory on time daily
  • Learns, understands, and adheres to all lab safety rules and company safety policies
  • Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment for each task
  • Attends required communication meetings weekly for scheduling purposes
  • Opens, sorts, and logs in samples received by mail daily
  • Assists with washing and visual analysis of root samples
  • Prepares root, twig, and foliage samples for processing via ELISA, DNA extraction, and PCR
  • Makes and pours various types of culture media for the lab
  • Autoclaves plant and culture waste materials
  • Washes dishes and performs other lab cleaning tasks

RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists with data collection for various research projects at the lab (one example is counting pest insects before and after treatment)

MISCELLANEOUS:
  • Interest in photography is a plus

QUALIFICATIONS
•        The ideal candidate will be actively enrolled at a two or four-year University pursuing a degree in Arboriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Plant Science, Landscape Design, or a related field
•        A positive attitude, willingness, and ability to participate within a multi-disciplinary team
•        Ability to work independently when necessary
•        Strong written and verbal communication skills
•        Proficient Microsoft Office skills (particularly Excel)
