Job Summary


Reports to: Assistant Vice President, Development Services and Strategic Solutions (AVP)

Directly Supervises: 2-3 Senior Associate, Associate and/or Assistant Directors

Indirectly Supervises: 5-7 Business Systems and Business Intelligence Analysts

The Director of Development Services and Strategic Solutions (the Director) provides strategic leadership to the Integrated Data Services (IDS) team. This includes elements of reporting, analysis, communications/marketing efforts, and data integrity, stewardship and governance. Additionally, the Director will serve as a member of the Development Services and Strategic Solutions (DS3) Leadership Team. They will assist the AVP in guiding and directing the overall DS3 team, and provide information to efficiently support bidirectional information flow between DS3 and the Office of University Development (OUD) Management Team.


Responsibilities*


Leadership of IDS team (50%)

  • Guide and support the IDS team through the stabilization of each Donor and Alumni Relationship Tool (DART) upgrade. 
  • Work with IDS leadership members to advance the team into future focused strategic direction.
  • Partner with the Senior Associate Director of IDS to determine strategic data enhancement acquisition strategy and increase efficiencies in business processes and tools. 
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of IDS to facilitate the relationship between reporting and analytics. Continue to improve Development reporting and foster data driven decision-making throughout the Development Community, including the use of data visualization and dashboarding tools such as Tableau. 
  • Work with the Assistant Director of IDS to develop robust reporting and data analytics for University Annual Giving to drive improved segmentation strategies for complex projects including CoOp and Telefund. Maintain effective marketing efforts by educating end-users, ensuring alignment to best practices, seeking new efficiencies where possible and cross training within the IDS team. 
  • Develop strategies to evangelize the work of the IDS team. Move the team toward a platform to have earned the status of a recognized source of Information Excellence. 
  • As appropriate, represent DS3 from an information integrity and management, reporting and information analysis, and marketing effort solutions standpoint in cross campus and vendor relation committees such as the Tableau User Group Community, and in ongoing meetings with the ITS (DART) team.
  • Supervise the Senior Associate, Associate, and Assistant Directors. Provide leadership, set and evaluate individual goals, develop and sustain appropriate training, coaching and mentoring. Provide additional oversight and leadership for the entire IDS team.
  • Coordinate a personnel performance management program designed to hire and retain the most talented and experienced staff possible.

Additional Responsibilities (50%)

  • Participate as a member of key OUD, UM, and DART coordination teams, such as the DART Prioritization Team and DART Project Management Core Team, as needed or requested by the AVP. Bring issues forward related to DART from the IDS team perspective.
  • Participate in the OUD Strategic Resource Management (SRM) Project Coordination Team. Represent issues related to service scope, resourcing levels and project intake related to the IDS team. Follow effective communication strategies, reports, and metrics to represent project status.
  • Working with the Development Community Learning team, develop strategy to educate the Development Community about Development information.
  • Serve as a member of the DS3 leadership team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications*


  • Masters degree in management information systems or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Considerable technical, administrative, budgetary, and supervisory experience.
  • Deep understanding of data warehouse concepts, business intelligence, dashboarding techniques and information deployment strategies to end users. Familiarity with tool sets typically used for reporting, data manipulation and data integration.
  • Experience in computing environments with an organization of similar size and complexity as UM.
  • Strong working knowledge of Development/Fundraising software and good general concepts of how online engagement software is used to help manage and improve relationships with constituents. Some familiarity with CRM software and tools will be an asset.
  • Ability to manage a technical support office with a strong ability to make ongoing and regular improvements in customer service.
  • Desire to learn the mission, goals and objectives of both UM as well as those of OUD and work in ways that help achieve these. Desire to enhance and improve UM's position as an international leader in Development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to transfer knowledge, train and explain concepts included in the characteristic duties and responsibilities of the position to people who may not understand the role of Development Services.


Desired Qualifications*


  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Experience in a development/fundraising organization in a higher education environment of a similar size and complexity to UM. Knowledge of university policies, procedures and best practices. 
  • In-depth knowledge of the university’s computing environment, specifically the UM's fundraising activities computing environment, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven history of successful partnerships on multi-discipline teams. Sense of the complexities of a central/decentralized environment and the need to be aware of the subtleties of working simultaneously with central and unit based Development staff. Negotiating skills and consensus builder.
  • Effective time management, problem-solving and analytical skills. Ability to forecast timelines and consistently meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of fundraising and financial data with the ability to understand differences between the two.
  • Knowledge of/or ability to learn best practices in development, fundraising and community service as recommended by related umbrella organizations such as CASE, NACUBO and others. Desire to stay ahead of industry trends by monitoring various media, peer networking and professional development.
  • Knowledge of concepts of public information and the Freedom of Information Act and an understanding of the repercussions if information is inaccurate or compromised.
