Do you have good working knowledge of all benefit types including Medicare, Medicaid and third-party insurance? How about knowledge of public and private resources as well as internal, agency financial policies or some knowledge of healthcare industry financial processes and policies? If so, then we invite you to apply to our full-time Community Health Worker I position. In this role, you will be responsible for screening clients, completing and filing applications for healthcare coverage or other financial support and helping clients navigate public benefits and health insurance.

This hours for this full-time position are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM. We are seeking a bi-lingual candidate that is passionate about helping the residents of DuPage County.


As a DuPage County employee, you will receive a comprehensive benefit package to include, 12 paid vacation days, 5 paid personal days, 12 paid Holidays, 12 weeks of paid parental leave, accrued sick leave and affordable health insurance coverage through Blue Cross Blues Shield. We offer tuition reimbursement as well as eligibility for a Federal Student Load Forgiveness Program. This is a pension-eligible position, for a secure retirement. This position is located at our Central Public Health Center in Wheaton, with a potential hybrid work schedule after training, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.*Salary is based on experience and may increase.

 

  • Assists clients with access to and navigation of public benefits, health insurance, and other supportive programs.
  • Completes and files basic applications for health care coverage or other financial support for health-supporting program access, such as for Medicaid, local access to care programs, food assistance programs, and hospital financial assistance.
  • Follows individual client application status through to resolution and communicates outcomes.
  • Collects sensitive information from clients and conducts client income assessments during face-to-face visits.
  • Applies agency financial policies to individual client circumstances, including eligibility for reduced fees.
  • Assists clients and direct service staff with understanding the Medicaid program and process for obtaining and maintaining benefits. 
  • Provides basic, culturally competent, education on common health insurance topics, including explanation of co-pays, coinsurance, premiums, deductibles, and payment options and minimum payments.
  • Conducts telephone outreach to clients to discuss coverage options and schedules follow-up.
  • Refers clients to community-based resources or other Health Department services as necessary.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work within multiple electronic systems in order to respond to client needs.
  • Performs concurrent documentation as necessary and adheres to established productivity expectations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of privileged information and adheres to patient privacy laws and demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of other ethnic groups and cultures.
  • Participates in emergency response activities as assigned.

Completion of some college coursework and three years of customer service within a healthcare setting which included experience with health insurance and/or healthcare billing and patient access or patient accounts.


Working skill in understanding and evaluating the eligibility process; working skill in investigating, obtaining and organizing information; working skill in using a personal computer, applicable software and peripheral equipment; working skill in understanding the problems, needs and motivations of clientele; working skill in organizing work in order to meet established deadlines; working skill in written and verbal communication; working skill in developing positive and professional relationships with internal and external customers; some skill in maintaining organized work files for reference.
