Internship Overview
The Communications and Grants Intern will provide hands-on support for Neighborhood Centers’ day-to-day communications work and assist with limited local grant research and simple applications.
This is primarily an execution-focused role. The intern will complete assigned projects using approved messaging, established templates, and guidance from the Development and Communications Director. The intern will receive ongoing instruction, feedback, and opportunities to build practical skills and a professional portfolio.
Most of the internship will focus on email communications, social media content, website updates, and basic marketing materials. Grant support will be limited to selected local opportunities and straightforward projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, format, and prepare internal and external email communications
- Create or adapt flyers, graphics, email images, and other materials using Canva and existing templates
- Draft, adapt, and schedule social media posts based on assigned priorities and approved messaging
- Update assigned website pages, links, event details, and program information
- Collect approved photos, program updates, quotes, and information needed for assigned communications
- Research selected local grant opportunities and help update the organization’s grant prospect list
- Assist with gathering supporting information and completing simple grant applications as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong writing and proofreading skills
- Strong attention to detail and organization
- Ability to follow direction, complete assigned work, and meet deadlines
- Proficiency with Canva and experience creating or adapting basic digital and social media content
- Comfort using Microsoft Office, social media platforms, artificial intelligence (AI), and other digital tools, with the ability to learn new systems and use technology to improve efficiency
- Ability to work independently while asking questions and seeking feedback when needed
- Interest in communications, marketing, journalism, nonprofit work, fundraising, or a related field
- Commitment to respectful, accurate, and community-centered communications
Experience with Mailchimp or another email marketing platform, website editing, social media scheduling, or grant research is helpful but not required.
Time Commitment and Work Arrangement
- 15 to 20 hours per week for approximately 10 to 14 weeks
- A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is required
- Regular availability Monday through Friday during standard work hours
- A consistent weekly schedule will be established around the intern’s class schedule
- In-person work is preferred, with a hybrid schedule considered based on the intern’s availability and the needs of the role
- No evening or weekend availability is required
Supervision and Learning Opportunities
The intern will work closely with the Development and Communications Director and receive:
- regular instruction, feedback, and opportunities to revise their work
- hands-on experience with email marketing, social media, website content, Canva, and local grant research
- opportunities to develop professional portfolio samples
- a midpoint and final review of progress and learning goals
Compensation
This is currently an unpaid internship. Academic credit may be available through the intern’s college or university.
Funding for compensation is being explored but is not guaranteed. Applicants should consider the position unpaid unless otherwise notified.
