Post-Baccalaureate Nurse Residency
I wanted to share an overview of the Post‑Baccalaureate Registered Nurse Residency (PB‑RNR) Program offered here at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System.
Bay Pines participates in the national year‑long PB‑RNR program designed to support newly graduated BSN nurses as they transition into professional practice. Residents complete a structured, 12‑month paid residency with a blend of clinical experience and protected education time, including two dedicated classroom days each month.
The program follows a three‑phase development model:
• Phase 1: Foundational clinical competency under close preceptorship.
• Phase 2: Rotational experiences in areas such as Outpatient Specialty Clinics, the Community Living Center, Inpatient Mental Health, and Home-Based Primary Care.
• Phase 3: Leadership and professional development activities to prepare residents for independent practice.
Bay Pines is one of 61 VA facilities offering this residency, which aims to build confidence, clinical judgment, and strong evidence‑based practice skills among new graduate nurses. The program has already successfully graduated its first cohort, who have reported significant growth in skill, confidence, and long‑term career clarity.
