The Beacon AmeriCorps VISTA Project Coordinator

Program Overview

The Wisconsin Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (WAFCC) AmeriCorps Program partners with clinics and community organizations across Wisconsin to expand access to care for uninsured and underinsured populations. AmeriCorps members help strengthen clinic capacity, improve community outreach, and support sustainable systems that allow organizations to serve more people, more effectively.

Through this partnership, members gain hands-on experience in nonprofit leadership, public health, community engagement, and systems development while making a measurable difference in communities across the state.

About the Role

The Community Engagement & Systems Coordination VISTA will serve at The Beacon, helping build the infrastructure that supports stronger collaboration, communication, and community impact. This is a capacity-building position designed for someone who is organized, mission-driven, creative, and excited to strengthen systems that help people thrive.

This is not a direct-service role. Instead, the VISTA member will focus on developing sustainable tools, processes, and communication systems that continue benefiting the organization long after the service year ends.

What You’ll Do

  • Build Communication Systems
  • Develop and improve systems for managing shared communication channels.
  • Create standardized outreach materials and communication protocols for partner agencies.
  • Strengthen coordination processes between community stakeholders and partner organizations.
  • Support Data & Evaluation Efforts
  • Establish and maintain data-tracking systems for programs and partnerships.
  • Assist with survey design, distribution, and analysis.
  • Organize structured feedback systems to support continuous program improvement.
  • Lead Community Engagement Initiatives
  • Develop social media content, outreach campaigns, and informational materials.
  • Create infographics, templates, and engagement tools to increase community awareness.
  • Strengthen systems for ongoing communication and collaboration with community partners.
  • Improve Organizational Infrastructure
  • Assist in updating policies, procedures, and internal documentation.
  • Improve document management and retention systems.
  • Support the development and tracking of staff training systems.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that enhance organizational efficiency.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who is:

  • Passionate about community impact, public health, or nonprofit work.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Skilled in communication, writing, and relationship-building.
  • Creative with social media, outreach, and visual communication tools.
  • Interested in systems thinking, data, and organizational development.
  • Adaptable, collaborative, and eager to learn.
  • Preferred qualifications include experience with community outreach, social media management, data tracking, nonprofit operations, or project coordination — but a strong commitment to service and learning is most important.

Why our AmeriCorps Program?

This VISTA role offers more than a typical volunteer experience. You’ll:

  • Gain professional experience in nonprofit leadership and community systems development.
  • Build a portfolio of real-world projects in communications, data systems, and organizational strategy.
  • Work alongside community leaders and partner organizations across Wisconsin.
  • Develop transferable skills in project management, outreach, evaluation, and systems coordination.
  • Leave behind sustainable tools and processes that continue helping communities after your service ends.

  • Segal Education Award or cash stipend upon successful completion.
  • Possible relocation assistance.
  • Health care allowance.
  • Child care assistance (if eligible).
  • One year of noncompetitive eligibility for federal employment.
  • Professional development and leadership experience through the WAFCC AmeriCorps Program.
