Job Description and Duties

The Water Use Efficiency Branch, for the Department of Water Resources (DWR), is responsible for implementing statewide urban and agricultural water use efficiency programs, strengthening local drought resilience, managing the California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS), and collecting and analyzing data on California’s urban and agricultural land and water use. Under the close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the Student Assistant (Engineering and Architectural Sciences), CIMIS unit, will work on the following tasks:

  • Support CIMIS staff with studies related to evapotranspiration estimation, water conservation, and water use efficiency projects.
  • Assist CIMIS staff with entering weather station sensor and equipment information into the CIMIS maintenance database, including gathering serial numbers and other relevant data.
  • Organize equipment at the CIMIS workshops. Conduct data analysis tasks, including preliminary data checks, creation and maintenance of spreadsheets, and basic statistical analysis.
  • Support CIMIS staff in conducting scientific research in atmospheric science, irrigation, and hydrology, as well as in outreach and engagement activities.
  • Assist with field activities, including setting up equipment and collecting data.
    Use geographic information system (GIS) software to analyze CIMIS spatial data.
  • Attend meetings and workshops and help with distributing CIMIS-related materials.
  • Provide support to other staff within the Water Use Efficiency Branch as needed.

Special Requirements

All applicants for Student Assistant positions must meet the following departmental eligibility requirements:

  1. Enrolled in nine (9) semester/eight (8) quarter units for undergraduate students or six (6) semester/four (4) quarter units for graduate students.  
  2. Achieved a 2.0 grade point average in the most recently completed academic term.
  3. Declared a major related to the duties of the advertised position and enrolled in coursework required for that major.

Student Assistant employees are paid hourly and are limited to 1500 hours per 12 consecutive months.

The duties require occasional travel to attend meetings, training, and/or field visits.
