Forestry Field Technician (Experienced)

Whitney Point, NY | Travel Throughout New York State

AMRO Forestry is seeking an experienced forestry technician to join our Whitney Point–based crew supporting a wide range of forest, ecosystem, and land management projects across New York State.

This is a field-intensive position for someone who is comfortable working outdoors, can contribute immediately, and takes pride in producing accurate, efficient, and professional fieldwork.

Work Location

  • Based out of Whitney Point, NY
  • Daily meet-up prior to traveling to job sites throughout the state
  • Work environments include forests, municipal lands, and park systems

Role Overview

This role is designed for a technician who values consistent fieldwork, project variety, and a high level of responsibility. You’ll be expected to operate both independently and as part of a professional team, contributing directly to project success.

Core Responsibilities

Forest Inventory & Measurement

  • Collect detailed stand data (DBH, height, canopy cover, defect assessment)
  • Conduct prism plots and fixed-area inventory

Timber Cruising & Marking

  • Assist with and perform timber cruising
  • Select and mark trees based on silvicultural prescriptions
  • Accurately record and manage field data

Land & Vegetation Management

  • Conduct forest stand improvement and vegetation management work
  • Perform invasive species control as a routine part of project work
  • Complete municipal tree inventories (street and park systems)

Pesticide Application (Required Component of the Role)

  • Regularly apply herbicides and pesticides as part of vegetation and invasive species management projects
  • Follow all safety protocols, regulations, and best practices
  • Obtain or maintain pesticide technician certification (Category 2 preferred; support available if needed)

General Field Operations

  • Navigate using GPS and assist with GIS data collection
  • Complete boundary marking and stand identification
  • Perform hands-on work including: 
    • Cutting, girdling, or removing small trees/brush
    • Tree planting and site work
    • Use of field equipment and tools

What We’re Looking For

Required

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather and terrain conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Strong tree identification skills
  • Willingness and ability to perform pesticide/herbicide application as a regular duty of the job

Experience / Education

  • At least 1 year of forestry field experience (inventory, timber marking, or related work)
    OR
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and hands-on experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with timber marking and cruising
  • Confidence working independently in the field
  • Familiarity with GPS/GIS tools
  • Experience operating chainsaws, brush saws, ATVs, or snowmobiles
