Girls in Engineering Academy Sociology Instructor

The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) is seeking to hire an enthusiastic, energetic and motivated Instructor to teach about basic concepts of Sociology to high school students in the Girls in Engineering Academy.  ESD is looking for an instructor who enjoys teaching girls to be the next generation of engineers.  The Sociology Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in sociology courses, fostering critical thinking, and engaging students in the study of social behavior, institutions, and structures. The instructor will create an inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation, academic growth, and real-world application of sociological concepts.

The ideal applicant would be expected to plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a collegiate learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The applicant must be able to plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences and establish and communicate clear objectives. ESD is interested in individuals who bring an exciting approach to teaching and learning.

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the study of basic Sociology through an exploration of its core areas including basic concepts of the Scientific Method, Norms, Values, Beliefs, and Symbols.  The major components of the course should include Class Systems and Economic Inequality, Race, Ethnicity, and Systemic Inequality.  Gender and Social Expectations, Privilege, Power, and Discrimination should be key elements of the course.  The course instruction should include topics such as Cultural Diversity and Subcultures, concepts of Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism, and how these concepts relate to culture and society.  Also part of the instruction should be topics related to the role of media, social media, and how it shapes and influences culture and society.  Other related topics should include Social Structure and Institutions.  Instruction should focus on major institutions such as Family, Education, Religion, the Economy and the Government.   For example, the key project for the Girls in Engineering Academy will be to work in groups of 5-6 using active learning to develop and find resolution for a Sociological Problem/Project. The students will be encouraged to think creatively throughout this project-based experience.

Essential Responsibilities:

Teach post-secondary-level courses in sociology (e.g., Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Cultural Diversity, Social Inequality). 

Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with State of Michigan Department of Education curriculum standards and learning outcomes. 

Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, including lectures, class discussions, case studies, and experiential learning. 

Assess student performance through assignments, exams, projects, and class participation. 

Provide timely and constructive feedback to support student success. 

Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and course materials. 

Foster an inclusive and respectful classroom environment that reflects diverse perspectives. 

Incorporate current events and research into course content to enhance relevance and class participation. 

Support initiatives related to student retention, equity, and academic excellence.

Academic Qualifications:

Pursuing or completed a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology (required) or a closely related field (Master’s degree preferred).

Prior teaching experience in sociology or social sciences (preferred).

Strong commitment and desire to work with underrepresented youth and staff in a collaborative environment.

Enjoy the challenge of implementing new teaching methods and educational tools in an ever changing and pre-engineering/STEM environment.

Ability to utilize technology and integrate the use of technology to instruct and provide feedback on student's performance and development.

Life-long learner, optimistic, flexible, and passionate about helping all students reach their potential.

Open to change and possess skills that promote student achievement and growth.

Exceptional interpersonal skills.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to engage and motivate diverse student populations.

Familiarity with instructional technology and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard). 

 

Other Qualifications:

Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

Provide proof of U.S. citizenship status and/or Lawful Permanent Resident.

Must have a valid (Michigan) driver’s license.

Must have reliable personal transportation to travel to teaching location.

Must attend staff meetings and the GEA Closing Ceremony.

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Professional in communication, appearance and deportment.

Be able to lift or move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.

Be able to work four weeks beginning July 12, 2026 thru July 31, 2026 (and one week of instructional preparation).
