Unemployment Compensation Agent

The Department of Labor & Industry is looking for an independent and highly motivated individual to join our Audit and Compliance, Pittsburgh West team as an Unemployment Compensation Tax Agent serving Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. 


 

In this role you will travel, work from home, and work on-site to help a wide range of employers and businesses comply with PA Unemployment Compensation (UC) law. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

 

As a UC Tax Agent, you will make in person and other types of contacts with employers and businesses within your assigned territory to communicate all requirements they must fulfill under PA UC law. This includes examining financial records and investigating issues to confirm compliance, correct errors, and identify fraudulent activity. Each case is unique and offers an abundance of new learning opportunities. Your responsibilities in this role will include: 


 

  • Advanced Auditing: Conduct and submit quality audits; examine and analyze employer financial records and related documents to calculate gross and taxable wages, ensure each employer reported and paid the correct tax liability, and identify hidden or unreported wages and misclassified workers
  • Record Reconstruction: Rebuild payroll records when documentation is incomplete or missing by conducting interviews, investigating facts, and collaborating with other auditors on complex cases; document missing, incorrect, or changed information and correct the employer’s account
  • Investigative Work: Conduct investigations into blocked UC claims, employer registration changes, and situations that could involve fraud, bankruptcy, or criminal proceedings under PA UC Law
  • Employer Communication: Explain audit findings, the assessment process, and appeal rights; answer any questions employers may have about UC Law
  • Audit Compliance and Collection: Obtain payments, initiate refunds, or negotiate payment plans; when necessary, use administrative reviews, criminal complaints, or subpoenas to compel employer compliance; attend and testify at court hearings
  • Case Documentation: Maintain thorough written records of audits, investigations, and all daily work activities

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, home headquartered
  • Frequent travel throughout assigned territory in Pennsylvania is required. Travel expenses will be paid.
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. AWS (alternate work schedule) may be available.
  • Telework: This position is home headquartered. In order to be home headquartered, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. 
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $59,345 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree which includes or is supplemented by 18 college credits in finance and accounting, of which at least 6 college credits are in accounting; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 18 college credits in finance and accounting, of which at least 6 college credits are in accounting.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.


 

Other Requirements:

  • This particular position also requires possession of a valid driver's license which is not under suspension.
  • You must currently reside in or be willing to relocate to Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, or Westmoreland County.
