Teacher - Career Technical Education, 2026-2027

 

Position:

Teacher - Career Technical Education

General Description:

Under the general direction of the Principal, develop and teach career and technical education skills and practices for high school students within an approved industry sector in which they are qualified.

Job Goals:

This instructional leader will work with other teachers and industry professionals when appropriate to instruct active and practical skills, technology systems and entrepreneurial attitudes to high school students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assesses individual student’s current level of functioning to determine needs;
  • Designs and implements instructional programs to meet student’s needs;
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials using community resources and alternative approaches to learning to teach students the knowledge, skills and behaviors necessary to function in the community;
  • Provides substitute teachers with written lesson plans, appropriate materials and instructions as to disciplinary and emergency procedures;
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and utilizes established curriculum;
  • Work with industry partners to establish, coordinate and monitor students in regular workplace assignments;
  • Keeps records of student attendance, provides feedback to students on their progress and development and and administers pre- or post-course surveys;
  • Supplements the program with an appropriate learning environment enriched through the use of audio-visual aides, technology, special programs, auxiliary books and materials;
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide a safe, healthy, orderly and productive classroom environment;
  • Participates in activities designed to promote professional growth;
  • Observes legal mandates;
  • Maintains student confidentiality;
  • Directs assignment classified staff and volunteers;
  • Performs related duties as assigned
    • Select appropriate materials and/or processes for different age, ability and functioning levels;

  • Must have validated experience within the appropriate industry sector, workplace attitudes, basic technology skills and business instruction;
  • Must view learners as partners, and actively solicit student thinking and direction;
  • Employ practical abilities to seek out and apply cutting edge industry resources to the instructional setting;
  • Create active and visible links to the industry community in order to assist with work-based learning guest speaking appearances and jobs for students;
  • Apply practical knowledge of industry-specific skills instruction, with the specific purpose of preparing and inserting students into the workplace;
  • Bilingual skills a plus;
  • Show as a daily practice unabashed enthusiasm for leading students into complex real life industry- specific projects.

 

Knowledge of:

  • Appropriate teaching strategies;
  • Classroom management techniques to correct self-defeating behaviors and to support self-enhancing behaviors;
  • Evaluation and assessment techniques and instruments;
  • Industry theory and practice, and the various job opportunities in the industry;
  • Industry-specific safety skills and practices;
  • Theory and practice of customer service;
  • Health and safety regulations.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from any accredited college with emphasis in the occupational area to be taught, preferred;
  • Formal experience or training in working with high school students.  Spanish speaking is desirable;
  • Valid California Designated Subjects Career Technical Education Teaching credential with the industry sector

 

Physical Requirements:

Ability to see for purposes of reading policies and printed material. Ability to understand speech at normal levels in person or on the telephone. Ability to communicate so others will be able to understand a normal conversation in person or on the telephone. Ability to operate necessary equipment including computers and computer software with dexterity. Ability to occasionally lift/carry supplies, materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to demonstrate mental acuity in the performance of job related duties and interactions with students and adults.

 

Working Conditions:

Public school work environment subject to sitting at a desk or standing for long periods of time, bending and crouching, kneeling at files, pushing/pulling file drawers, equipment and supplies, reaching in all directions and working at a computer or other standard school equipment.

 

Work Year:

185 days per year, 7.5 hours per day.

 

Salary:

As set forth in the certificated salary schedule.
