About the Internship
Woodruff Scout Camp is seeking a compassionate, motivated, and professional student pursuing a degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Mental Health Services, Human Services, or a related field to serve as our Mental Health Intern for Summer 2026.
This internship provides meaningful hands-on experience in youth mental health support, wellness education, communication guidance, crisis prevention, and staff wellbeing—making it an ideal senior capstone, practicum, or field placement.
The Mental Health Intern supports both campers (ages 11–17) and seasonal staff, promoting emotional resilience, confidence, and a positive camp culture.
Position Summary
The Mental Health Intern works closely with the Woodruff Mental Health Council Leadership, the Camp Director, the Program Chief, and the Health Lodge team to provide non-clinical emotional support, positive coping strategies, and wellbeing oversight throughout camp.
This role focuses on prevention, early identification, wellness messaging, and support—not clinical diagnosis or treatment. The intern serves as a friendly, visible presence throughout camp who helps ensure Woodruff remains a safe and emotionally healthy environment.
Key Responsibilities
Support for Campers
• Provide emotional support for homesickness, stress, social challenges, and adjustment
• Guide youth in developing coping strategies
• Observe camper interactions and identify concerns early
• Coordinate with Health Lodge and Mental Health Council leadership for additional support
• Promote emotional safety, kindness, and inclusivity across programs
Support for Staff
• Conduct wellness check-ins with seasonal staff
• Support conflict resolution and stress-management strategies
• Assist leadership in staff wellness activities, reminders, and resources
• Provide non-clinical support with appropriate escalation
Prevention & Education
• Provide short wellness reminders at meetings (sleep, hydration, stress, self-care)
• Create educational posters or tools for emotional safety and wellbeing
• Reinforce youth protection and mental health awareness policies
Collaboration & Communication
• Work hand-in-hand with Mental Health Council Leadership on emotional support needs
• Communicate concerns appropriately to the Camp Director and Program Chief
• Coordinate with program area directors to support struggling campers
• Maintain professionalism and confidentiality
Qualifications & Requirements
• Actively pursuing a degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Human Services, or Mental Health-related fields
• Excellent for senior capstone, practicum, or applied internship credit
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Calm, compassionate, youth-focused demeanor
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
• Comfortable living and working in an outdoor camp environment
• Able to identify when concerns should be escalated
• Must follow Scouting America Youth Protection policies
This internship is non-clinical. The intern does not diagnose or provide therapy.
