Probation Officer- Recovery Court

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Riverside Community Corrections is seeking qualified applicants for a grant-funded Probation Officer to be utilized for the Hopewell, Prince George and Surry Recovery Court.  

The sworn officer of the court primarily performs professional work as a member of the multi-disciplinary Recovery Court team; evaluates potential Recovery Court participants as referred by the courts and provides supervision of Recovery Court participants; coordinates treatment and community service referrals and makes collateral contacts as necessary; verifies residence and employment and conducts field visits as needed; performs drug and alcohol tests; monitors payment compliance with court-ordered financial obligations including program fees and court costs/fines; participates in weekly team staffing meetings and testifies in court as required; documents case file activities and maintains Recovery Court database; follows up on pending court cases/dispositions of charges via VCIN and Supreme Court database; performs other duties as required or directed.

Qualification Requirements

Successful candidate must have general knowledge of community resources; general knowledge of the Department of Criminal Justice Services, Code of Virginia Laws and Ordinances, District and Circuit Courts, and County policies and procedures; general knowledge of factors related to crime and delinquency, and substance use disorder; ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing; ability to make decisions and interpretations in accordance with established rules, policies, and procedures; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Recovery Court participants, stakeholders, and the general public; ability to work some non-standard hours including evenings and weekends and be on-call as needed.

Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology or related field. Previous criminal justice experience and experience testifying in court strongly preferred.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Virginia Driver's license required. Successful candidate must complete DCJS CORE Training within one year of date of hire and must obtain VCIN certification within 6 months of date of hire. Pre-­employment drug testing and criminal background check, to include fingerprinting, required.
