Oyster Restoration and Environmental Education Technician

Job Description: 

As an oyster restoration and environmental education technician, your responsibilities will include improving the St. Mary's River Watershed Association's current environmental education work and assisting with all oyster restoration activities. Your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with all aspects of program operations, including planning, executing, evaluating, and refining future programs
  • Assisting with and conducting water quality monitoring, oyster reef surveys, and research
  • Assisting youth with building reef balls and ensuring their safety throughout the process and educating and engaging youth about the oyster reef habitat and the importance of oyster restoration
  • Assisting with oyster restoration activities, including but not limited to the operation of the shellfish nursery, oyster plantings, washing oyster shell with a power washer, and preparing oyster shell for the nursery tank
  • Assist with planning and implementation of volunteer workdays and events
  • Assisting with other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Basic proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Team player who demonstrates self-motivation and reliability
  • Ability to lift at least 40 pounds
  • Excellent swimming abilities and comfortable diving using a surface air compressor (does not require SCUBA certification)
  • Has reliable transportation
  • Willing to learn, network, and engage other team members and the public
  • Appreciation and passion for nature, restoration, and environmental education
  • Ability to work at least 30 hours per week during the summer

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Volunteer coordination experience
  • SCUBA Certification
  • Creativity
  • Boating skills
