County Hospital Budget and Finance Intern

This internship will provide an overview of how budget and finance processes support and inform one another. The County Hospital intern will gain insight on how County government partners with UW Medicine and Harborview Medical Center and how that partnership translates into tactical processes that support the delivery of County Hospital capital projects and County Hospital operations. The internship will build skills in understanding processes, roles and systems; in developing visual management and documentation; and in facilitating collaboration and process design. By the end of the internship, the intern will build an understanding of public sector capital budgeting and gain exposure to how large public healthcare assets are budgeted, financed, and funded. The internship will support Executive Zahilay’s Better Government priority, which identifies Harborview’s effective use of public funds and improved health outcomes for vulnerable residents as a long-term recommendation.

Interns will gain a firsthand understanding of the workings of government, get an overview of how projects, policies, and legislation are created and implemented, understand why civic engagement matters, and build an appreciation for the importance of public service. Depending on the assignment, interns may interact with a wide variety of people including staff, elected officials, community members, or program participants.

Interns will have the opportunity to be part of a high-performing team and take advantage of County training and learning opportunities. Opportunities to engage as an intern cohort, network and connect with leaders across the organization, and participate in outings to various County operations add to the intern experience on the Executive Budget Team.
