Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
- High School Degree, equivalent or greater
- Knowledge of local streets in Manchester, NH
- Interpersonal skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prioritize, manage time, and work independently effectively
- Understanding of confidentiality requirements
- Computer skills, basic required, advanced skills preferred
- Previous experience in transportation operations, dispatch, or logistics preferred
- Ability to obtain CDL-B, Passenger Endorsement, School Bus Endorsement, Air Brake Restriction Removal, NH School Bus Certificate, is highly preferred
- Bilingual preferred
Specific Core Function:
- The Transportation Specialist is a key operational role responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and reliable daily operation of the District’s student transportation services. This position blends hands-on dispatch and daily operations responsibilities with coordination, routing, logistics, charter scheduling, and customer service functions. The Transportation Specialist works closely with the Transportation Manager, dispatch staff, drivers, maintenance, school administrators, families, and external partners to ensure uninterrupted transportation services aligned with District policy, budgetary guidelines, and best practices.
Responsibilities of the Position:
- Provide oversight and implementation of school bus routing and daily transportation operations
- Open and/or close the transportation/operations office as assigned
- Provide two-way radio and telephone support to drivers and field staff and maintain daily communication with operators upon arrival and departure with professionalism
- Track daily employee attendance and assist in driver time-off procedures
- Creates and maintain daily crew sheets, work assignments, and coverage of open runs as needed
- Respond to inquiries (families, schools, staff) in a timely and professional manner
- Coordinate with maintenance staff regarding vehicle availability and driver concerns
- Assign vehicles to routes and trips as appropriate
- Facilitate scheduling of athletic, extracurricular, and various school trips
- Oversee trip logistics, including scheduling, vehicle assignment, invoicing, and efficiency review
- Maintain routing and logistics data within transportation software systems (e.g., Traversa), including schedules and vehicle assignments
- Support situational impact assessments related to redistricting, route changes, or labor agreement impacts
- Participate in the on-call rotation process to ensure operational coverage
- Maintain and track lost-and-found records
- Monitors and adjusts onboard camera systems as needed
- Enter and manage operational data accurately and timely at the start of each shift
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Manager, Transportation Director, Assistant Superintendent of Operations, or designee
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Monitor driver fitness for duty and ensure compliance with District policies and state and federal transportation regulations
- Receive and review transportation reports
- Interface with school administration, families, and external agencies as needed regarding transportation incidents and/or changes
- Support disciplinary processes in coordination with Transportation leadership, as warranted and outlined in the Union contract
- Participate in the on-call rotation to ensure operational coverage
Specified Length/Hours of Position:
- This is a non-affiliated 228-day position. This position is a salaried position that requires a minimum of 40 hours per week including weekend, holiday, and evening work as needed. This position is also “on-call” as needed to ensure proper operational management coverage. Generally, 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM, Mon-Fri, or 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM but could be adjusted if agreed upon with the Transportation Manager or Transportation Director.
