PARKS SEASONAL LABORER
The Opportunity
The Parks Seasonal Laborer performs routine maintenance and development tasks within a designated park or cemetery site. Duties may include assignments as a Parks Laborer, Cemetery Laborer, Downtown Laborer, or Park Ranger. The typical workweek includes some weekend or holiday duty assignments.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Parks Foreman and Parks Director.

Length of employment period
This is a seasonal part-time or full-time position lasting up to 200 days, from late April to mid-October. A specific work schedule will be established, which may include weekends and holidays.

Dress and personal appearance
While on duty, all park personnel must maintain a neat, professional appearance and practice good personal hygiene. The following guidelines apply:
- Prohibited Attire: Cutoffs, shorts, skirts, halter tops, and tank tops are not permitted.
- Required Attire: Employees must wear work boots and long pants while performing duties.
- Clothing Restrictions: Clothing displaying references to drugs, alcohol, foul language, or political opinions is not allowed.
RESPONSIBILITIES
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or modified at any time.
- Perform janitorial duties at rental facilities, comfort stations, picnic pavilions, and other structures, ensuring cleanliness and sanitation standards are met.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with City staff and the public.
- Work non-traditional shifts, including days, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The typical workweek is Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
- Trim grass around trees, posts, and other obstacles; mow turf areas using walk-behind mowers.
- Pick up litter and empty trash containers.
- Clean and perform basic preventive maintenance on vehicles and other motorized equipment.
- Make minor repairs to fences, signs, picnic tables, and other park facilities.
- Load, transport, unload, and handle park operational supplies and equipment.
- Monitor visitor behavior and immediately notify a supervisor of graffiti, vandalism, or other issues.
- Greet visitors and provide information about park use, safety requirements, and points of interest.
- Assist in repairing or constructing park buildings and other structures as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive issues and nonpublic records.
- Perform other duties as assigned by full-time Parks staff.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

- Previous customer service and custodial experience, or experience in a related field, is preferred.
- Ability to interact tactfully with the public and co-workers and communicate effectively.
- Ability to efficiently and safely complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Availability for a flexible and intermittent work schedule, with the ability to work independently and take initiative when required.
- Experience using small engine equipment (e.g., grass trimmers, backpack blowers, walk-behind mowers) is preferred.
REQUIREMENTS
A valid Michigan driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record allowing insurability by the City of St. Joseph's current vehicle insurance carrier is required.
High school diploma, GED or currently enrolled in High School.
Must be at least 18 years old at the time of employment.
Good character with no history of serious criminal activity.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
