The H.E.A.R.T. Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to education through recreation and equine-assisted activities. Our mission is to use horses and recreation to make school and therapy more relevant and more fun for students with additional needs. Through inclusive, activity-based programming, we empower youth and young adults to build confidence, develop life skills, and experience meaningful personal growth.

Camp Colley is our overnight summer camp experience in Happy Jack, Arizona, where we bring this mission to life through equine engagement, outdoor adventure, structured recreation, and community living.

 

Position Overview

The Summer Camp Counselor is a residential leadership role based in Happy Jack, AZ for the duration of assigned camp sessions. Counselors live on-site and are actively involved in all aspects of camp life — including daytime programming, meals, evening activities, and tent supervision.

This position involves consistent engagement and supervision within a structured, supportive camp environment. Staff work collaboratively in assigned teams and follow scheduled rotations to ensure camper safety while also allowing for designated breaks and rest periods.

Counselors serve as mentors, leaders, and positive role models throughout the full camp experience.

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Supervise and engage campers in a residential camp setting
  • Provide tent supervision during evening routines and overnight hours (with shared staff coverage)
  • Support campers during daily routines including wake-up, meals, activities, transitions, and bedtime
  • Facilitate structured recreational, outdoor, and equine-based activities
  • Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive tent community
  • Support camper independence, social development, and confidence-building
  • Follow safety procedures and individualized support guidelines
  • Communicate effectively with leadership regarding camper well-being
  • Contribute to camp traditions including campfires, talent show, nature excursions, and themed programming

 

Work Environment

  • Residential, on-site role in Happy Jack, AZ
  • Campers and staff reside in tent-based accommodations during assigned sessions
  • Active, outdoor-based program environment
  • Extended days typical of overnight camp programming
  • Comfort with outdoor living and immersive camp experiences is required

 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification (or ability to obtain prior to start date)
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Experience working with youth in structured settings (camp, education, recreation, childcare, etc.)
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with individuals with developmental or learning differences
  • Background in recreation, education, psychology, kinesiology, or related fields
  • Experience with equine or outdoor programming
  • Prior residential or overnight camp experience
