Accounting Technician I
The City of Saint Paul has two opportunities for Accounting Technician I positions in Parks and Recreation and Saint Paul Regional Water Services (SPRWS). These roles support essential financial operations and help ensure strong financial stewardship in a public service environment.
Parks and Recreation position
Hours: Monday through Friday core business hours with a flexible hybrid schedule.
The Parks and Recreation Accounting Technician I supports the department’s daily financial processing, ensuring accurate and timely handling of payments and revenue. This role plays a key part in recording and reconciling financial activity that keeps community programs and facilities operating smoothly.
Here's what you can expect to do:
- Process accounts payable entries, accounts receivable transactions, and cash receipts, and assist with related reporting.
- Investigate and resolve payment questions while supporting program staff, vendors, and contractors.
Saint Paul Regional Water Services (SPRWS) position
Hours: Monday through Friday core business hours, with the opportunity for remote work after the probationary period.
The SPRWS Accounting Technician I supports essential accounting functions that ensure accurate billing, cost tracking, and financial recordkeeping for the water utility. The role works across multiple financial systems to maintain reliable and transparent financial documentation.
Here's what you can expect to do:
- Process and record billable work, deposits, invoices, and reimbursement documentation.
- Perform monthly cost allocations, prepare journal entries, and support fixed asset tracking and annual inventory activities.

Position Requirements
High school graduation and at least 15 credit hours/semester equivalents in courses acceptable toward the junior accounting certificate as given by the University of Minnesota (certain courses may be substituted for those required for the junior accounting certificate);
and
Two years experience as an Accounting Clerk II or equivalent (bookkeeping work in accordance with policies and procedures in maintaining financial records, posting data to various accounts, auditing invoices and records; preparing related forms and reports). Each additional year of qualifying experience may be substituted for five credit hours or semester equivalents.

Assessment Process: Computer Assessment
The assessment consists of multiple choice questions developed to assess your knowledge of: Accounting Principles, Time Management, Payroll, and Financial Accounting. Further information, directions, and a link to complete the online assessment will be emailed to eligible candidates through the email address included in your application. Eligible candidates will receive this information after March 11, 2026.

Eligible Lists Created from Open Job Posting: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Non-promotion eligible lists typically are pass/fail and promotion eligible lists are typically ranked. If the open eligible list created contains a veteran, one open list will exist. When there are no veterans remaining on the eligible list (i.e. hired, withdrawn) from an open list that also contains promotional candidates, two lists will be created: one open list and one promotion list. If two lists exist, the promotion list must be exhausted before the open list is considered.
Final Selection Process: Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.
Pre-Employment Screening: This position will require credit check and a background check which may include criminal history, and employment history as a condition of employment and may include a drug test.
