CITY AUDITOR INTERNSHIP

What would a typical day on the job be like? 

Are you interested in what happens in an auditing office? Apply for an internship with the City of Newport News – City Auditor’s Office

A typical day may involve assisting with audit fieldwork, reviewing documentation, testing internal controls, and analyzing data in Excel. Interns will also attend team meetings and collaborate with staff on audit projects to gain hands-on experience in the auditing process. 

 

How much money can I make? 

The rate of pay for this internship will depend on your course completion, previous work history, and other qualifications. 

 

What work would I do? 

As an intern, you would help support audits across city departments. You would also perform control and substantive testing. Part of your internship would include helping to organize and summarize the findings of an audit. 

 

What type of degree program would be best suited for this internship? 

If you are in a degree program in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Public Administration Programs then this internship would be a great fit for you! 

Other related fields would include Economics, Data Analytics, or Information Systems.

 

What are the qualifications for this position? 

  1. Office administration, understanding of Microsoft office systems, procedures, and best practices for managing day-to-day operations. 
  2. Business communication, knowledge or professional correspondence, including formatting tone, and style.
  3. Organizational policies, familiarity with the organization’s structures, goals and procedures. 
  4. Document management, expertise in record keeping, filing systems, and confidentiality requirements. 
  5. Technology proficiency in Microsoft Office and office equipment. 
  6. Knowledge of scheduling and coordinating meetings. 

 

What type of schedule will I work and how long will the internship be? 

This internship position will average approximately 25-35 hours a week. There may be potential for a full-time employment opportunity at the end of the program, if the City has vacancies at that time.
