Position Overview

Woodruff Scout Camp is hiring a Fishing Lead to run our camp-wide fishing program under the supervision of the Nature Director. This role focuses on introducing youth ages 11–17 to fishing in a fun, encouraging, and hands-on environment while teaching skills, conservation, and outdoor ethics.

The Fishing Lead helps campers experience success β€” whether it’s their first cast, first fish, or learning patience on the water. This position is ideal for someone passionate about fishing who enjoys mentoring youth and sharing outdoor knowledge.

Responsibilities

Program Instruction

Teach daily fishing classes and merit badge sessions

Demonstrate casting techniques, knot tying, bait selection, and fish identification

Help beginners feel comfortable and confident fishing

Support open fishing periods and specialty program activities

Equipment & Maintenance

Repair and maintain fishing poles, reels, and tackle

Manage bait and tackle inventory

Prepare gear before each program session

Maintain clean and organized fishing areas and docks

Youth Engagement

Encourage campers and create a welcoming learning environment

Help Scouts develop patience, responsibility, and outdoor skills

Create fun challenges, mini-competitions, and engaging activities

Promote conservation and respect for wildlife

Program Support

Work closely with the Nature Director and nature staff

Assist with nature area programming when needed

Support evening programs and camp-wide activities

Qualifications

Required

Basic freshwater fishing knowledge

Ability to teach and work with youth

Positive attitude and strong communication skills

Willingness to work outdoors in summer weather

Preferred

Experience teaching fishing or working with youth

Knowledge of knots, bait types, and fish species

Camp, park, or outdoor recreation experience

First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)

Compensation & Benefits

$325 per week

Schedule

Report Date (Staff Training): May 23, 2026

Camper Season: May 31 – July 18, 2026

End Date: July 19, 2026
Staff live on-site for the duration of employment.
