POSITION: JUDICIAL LAW CLERK for Judge Nancy Camiak (fulltime)

 

ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: 

$57,197 - $76,633 plus benefits-paralegal or law school student

$63,060 - $84,488 plus benefits - law school graduate

 

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Under direct supervision of District Court Judge Nancy Camiak, the Law Clerk assists in District Court proceedings; maintains files; performs legal research; and provides information and assistance to the judge, court personnel, attorneys and the general public. Additionally, the law clerk is responsible for maintaining decorum in the court room and opening and closing court. The candidate must possess strong research and writing skills and have the ability to timely draft written opinions and court rulings as well as assist with clerical work for the judge.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A paralegal, 2L, 3L, or recent graduate from an accredited law school and able to work full time.
  2. Pass the employment medical examination provided by the County of Oakland.

 

 

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Must have strong research and writing skills.
  2. Proficient with current computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets and legal research programs.
  3. The ability to communicate and work with attorneys, court personnel and the general public.

GENERAL SUMMARY

Performs various duties relative to the conducting of District Court proceedings and ensuring that all necessary legal documents relative to the proceedings are in order. Opens and closes courtroom proceedings, maintains order and decorum in the courtroom and escorts, guards, and swears in jury members. Provides information and assistance to the judge, court personnel, attorneys, and the general public. Reviews legal documents to verify accuracy and/or conformance with court rulings. Enters into a computer or other records, the daily accounts of court proceedings, following established recording practices. Performs legal research as requested by the judge and various clerical functions as required. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Ensures the courtroom operates efficiently by checking in all interested parties before court proceedings start.

 

Declares the official opening and closing of court sessions and calls cases in court by stating the name and number of the case. Assists the judge by administering oaths to jury members and witnesses, sets up evidence displays and retrieves legal files and documents.

 

Maintains order and decorum in the courtroom among family members, spectators, media representatives and respondents by providing assistance in proper courtroom procedures and assists in the removal of disruptive persons.

 

Provides instructions to jurors regarding court proceedings, provides support during deliberation and as needed escorts them to and from the courtroom.

 

Performs special liaison assignments for the judge upon request, including the notification of attorneys, court personnel and respondents regarding the judge's requirements and decisions.

 

Performs legal research and obtains legal documents, books,and statutes as requested by the judge.Drafts legal opinions as directed by the judge.

 

Operates a computer terminal to enter or retrieve information relative to particular cases.

 

Ensures all the necessary legal documents pertaining to a court case have been properly filed. Obtains files as needed for each case.

 

Reviews records of the court's disposition on cases to ensure that the records are up to date and that cases are proceeding in a timely manner.

 

Reviews written orders brought in by attorneys, for accuracy and conformance to legal procedure, and verifies the court's prior ruling against the record.

 

Notifies as necessary, attorneys, respondents, litigants, and court personnel of the judge's decision and checks with attorneys to confirm the progress of a case to ensure correct scheduling of the court's time.

 

Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

May encounter situations where people could become confrontational.

Note: Job performance, knowledge, ability and/or previous experience may substitute for Desirable Qualifications. The District Court Administrator and/or Chief District Court Judge has the right to waive the desirable qualifications.

  1. Be enrolled in Law School.

  3. Have reasonable ability in following procedural changes.

  5. Have reasonable ability to develop and maintaine ffective working relationships with administrators, employees and the general public.
  6. Familiar with current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and Internet software.
