Urban Forestry Intern
The City of Portsmouth is seeking a motivated and environmentally friendly Urban Forestry Intern for the Summer of 2026! This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to learn about tree care, forestry operations, and municipal fieldwork while working directly with experienced Arborists.
Hours: A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week is expected during the summer, with the possibility for part-time work in the spring and/or fall.
Schedule: Monday-Friday: 7:30am-3:30pm with flexibly during the school calendar year.
Pay rate: $19.00 per hour.
NATURE OF WORK
The Urban Forestry Intern will assist the Highway Departments Urban Forestry staff performing a variety of field work throughout the City of Portsmouth. Candidates for this position will be required to work outdoors with the field crew. Intern will have the opportunity to choose a special project to work on for the duration of the summer that aligns with their interests and/or curriculum.
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Arborist Foreman, Arborist Technician, or their designee. Tasks are assigned daily with direction provided by supervisory staff. When assigned to the field crew, the Arborist Technician will have direct oversight of the tree work and all associated staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Water newly planted trees.
2. Work with the field crew to perform urban canopy maintenance, such as pruning or removing trees, and perform associated tasks including site cleanup and safety procedures.
3. Brew and apply compost tea.
4. Perform basic City infrastructure pruning over sidewalks, roads, and street signs.
5. Capture work and update information in the tree inventory system.
6. Operate forestry machinery such as brush chipper, stump grinder, or grapple truck.
7. Work on project of choice with Supervisors assistance.
8. Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

ENVIRONMENT, WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT
Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions. The position requires lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted. Work will be performed in parks, roadside, or any other City owned property. Due to the nature of work, the position requires mental clarity and awareness as accidents may occur that can lead to property damage or injury.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates currently majoring in Forestry, Landscaping, Natural Resources, or related are encouraged to apply. Previous experience is not required as training will be provided.
Candidate must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
