Introduction: LAW is seeking applications for a full-timelegal secretary in its MilwaukeeOffice.
Legal Action of Wisconsin, Inc. (“Legal Action”) is a non-profit law firm, funded by the federal Legal Services Corporation, the Wisconsin Trust Account Foundation, and many other sources and supporters. Legal Action provides free civil legal aid to low-income persons throughout Wisconsin with offices in Milwaukee, Madsion,Racine, Oshkosh, Green Bay, La Crosse and Wausau. Legal Action attorneys and paralegals have expertise in a range of substantive areas, but most of our direct representation is in the areas of housing, public benefits, removing barriers to employment, consumer law, and family law.

Office Location: This position will be based in Legal Action’s Milwaukeeoffice.
Governance: This position is represented for purposes of collective bargaining by District Council 32, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, and its affiliated LOCAL 1954. The collective bargaining agreement between Legal Action and the Union, in addition to Legal Action’s personnel policies, govern this position.

Position Description: The Legal Secretary provides front desk and administrative support to ensure smooth daily operations of the office.This position serves as the first point of contactfor clients and the public, supports attorneys and paralegals with clerical and communication tasks, and helps connect clients to appropriate legal and community resources. The Legal Secretary must be able to manage competing priorities, maintain professionalism in a fast-paced environment, and handle sensitive information with discretion.
Key Responsibilities: The Legal Secretary serves as the first point of contact for clients and the public and provides essential administrative support to attorneys and paralegals. Key responsibilities include:

Client Intake & Front Desk Support
- Professionally answerand route telephone calls; take accuratemessages and make appropriate referrals.
- Greet and assistclients and membersof the public in person.
- Contact clients at the directionof attorneys or paralegal staff.

Administrative & ClericalSupport
- Perform generalclerical duties includingfiling, maintaining case files, processing incoming and outgoing mail, and ordering office supplies.
- Manage multiplepriorities and interruptions, including phone calls,walk-in clients, and deliveries.
- Use sound judgment in following established policies and procedures.

Technology & Communication
- Utilize computersystems effectively, including proficiency in MicrosoftWord and Excel.
- Maintain clear, professional communication with clients,staff, and the public.

Knowledge & Referrals
- Develop workingknowledge of LAW’sservices and relevantcommunity resources to make appropriate legal and non-legal referrals.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong oral and writtencommunication skills.
- Ability to interactprofessionally and work cooperatively with staff, clients,and the public.
- Ability to use basiccomputer systems, includingemail, word processing software, and internet-based applications.
- Ability to answer, route,and respond to incoming phone calls in a professional manner.
- Willingness and ability to learn job-specific procedures and systemsduring the probationary period.
- Ability to manage multipletasks and maintainaccuracy in a busy officeenvironment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in a receptionist, secretarial, or administrative support role.
- Experience using multi-line phonesystems.
- Experience workingin a nonprofit, client-facing environment or legal services.
- Ability to proficiently speak,read, write, and understand both Spanish and English.
Salary/Compensation: Legal Action’s salaries are not negotiable: Our salary scales are based solely on years of experience with each step on the scale equivalent to one full year of experience. If we make an offer to an applicant, we depend on the resume that the applicant submitted, and we do not allow for revisions after submission. The salary steps for this position range from:
- $39,882 (Step 3, has completed 3 years of experience)
- $43,047 (Step 8, has completed 8 years of experience)
- $47,479 (Step 15, has completed 15 years of experience)
- $55,139 (Step 25, has completed 25 years of experience)
Fringe Benefits: All Legal Action employees receive a full package of fringe benefits. It currently includes: employer-paid healthand dental insurancefor employee, spouse,and family with a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA), employer-paid life and long-term disability insurance; employee-paid incomeprotection benefits; a profit-sharing plan;generous sick leave accrual; and at least four
weeks of combined vacation and personal holidays per year. (Legal Action policies require employees with a spouseto contribute $200/month to the health insurance premiumif the spouse has other health insurance available to them.)
Spanish or Hmong Language Frequency Premium: Legal Action’s Salary Administration Plan includes additional pay of either$2,400 annually or $4,800 annuallyto those employeeswho are fluent in Spanish or Hmong.
Supervision: This position is supervisedby the Milwaukee Office Coordinator.
Probationary Period: This position is subject to a probationary period of up to six months.
