Organization: Polk County
Location: Balsam Lake, WI
Duration: 12 weeks (Approx. 480 hours)
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Preferred Start Date: June 1, 2026
Compensation: Paid (details provided during interview)
Housing: Not provided; interns must secure housing within a reasonable distance.
About the Internship
The Land Information Internship offers students practical experience aligned with coursework in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Surveying, Planning, and Land Information. Interns will work closely with Polk County’s Land Records Department to apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect, input, and update geospatial data within the county GIS system.
- Gather and integrate surrounding county records for 911 dispatch mapping.
- Update trail and street centerline features using orthoimagery and GPS data.
- Map historical landmarks for the Polk County Historical Society GIS layer.
- Digitize historic land records for long-term accessibility.
- Create thematic and comprehensive maps for analysis and presentations.
- Translate legal land descriptions and PLSS data into cartographic representations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Experience with ArcGIS Pro, GPS technology, and map production.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and common file types.
- Understanding of PLSS and property legal descriptions.
- Good driving record
Eligibility
- Currently pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Geomatics, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Planning, or related fields.
Additional Information
- Physical requirements include walking, standing, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Work primarily in an office setting, occasional outdoor tasks.
