Program Description:
L’Arche Chicago extends an invitation to come and see the extraordinary beauty of a community of faith that celebrates the gifts of each person, including those with intellectual disabilities. We are a community where people with and without disabilities share life together in homes, as family. In our group homes, we strive to merge quality care and mutual relationships, building a community where every person has a genuine place of belonging. Our Chicago community joins 151 other L’Arche communities in 37 different countries around the world. We seek to be a sign of hope, revealing the truth that all people, including those with disabilities, have gifts to share.
Job Title: Caregiver (Assistant)
Duties and Responsibilities:
In L’Arche Chicago, 15 adult Core Members live with Assistants who commit a year or more of sharing life together. Assistants accompany Core Members both as friends and in providing practical help in daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, attending doctor’s appointments, and medication administration. Assistants listen to, support, and build relationships with the Core Members.
Requirements:
For L’Arche, the most important criteria for Assistants are an open heart, willingness to learn, commitment to personal growth, and belief in the unique sacredness and value of every individual. Assistants should be willing to share in all tasks relevant to maintaining a warm and welcoming home. Assistants will share life in our homes through building relationships with our Core Members and provide caregiving support. We expect that Assistants are able to communicate, be present, be inviting, take initiative, and most importantly follow through.
BVS Volunteers receive a $250 stipend per month. Food, housing, and insurance are also provided in addition to the stipend. Volunteer positions are for one year with option for extension.
