 Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career internship opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Grand Teton National Park will host a Trails Laborer.

This Trails Laborer is an AmeriCorps position. This position will involve serving as a trails laborer in aspects of trail restoration, erosion control, and construction and will be based entirely outdoors. This steward may also have the opportunity to create education and implementation of Leave No Trace principles. He or she will operate equipment and tools to perform daily tasks and serve with a team on a number of different field projects. Work will be challenging and rewarding, and offers opportunities to grow in teamwork, physical labor, and personal development. Work in other park divisions may also be available to round out the stewardship. Housing and travel to and from host site will be provided. A strong interest in field service and outdoor recreation would be necessary for this stewardship. Applicants should have a positive attitude, ability to serve cooperatively on a team in a variety of temperatures and outdoor conditions, have ability to hike between 5-10 miles a day, carry a load of 50lbs, and camp for up to 8 days at a time.

 Description of Duties/Outcomes:

The steward will serve closely with an NPS trail crew of 4-5 people. Training opportunities in using hand and power tools as well as trail construction and maintenance principles, with an emphasis on dry stone masonry. Primary project for summer 2026 will be trail construction on a badly eroded trail.  Stewards will work on 3 backcountry hitches comprised of 8 days of working out of backcountry locations in the Tetons.

 
Eligibility Requirements:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Able to pass a MVR check and has had license for at least three year or 21 years of age to be insured for driving.

  • Ability to serve in adverse weather conditions. Trails work continues rain or shine.

  • Living Allowance of $688 per week.

 Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve Four 10-hour days, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service 
  • Up to three, eight-day backcountry hitches may be required during the season.
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term. 

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
