Structural Engineer Intern

This role is in Des Moines, IA.

What You Will Accomplish: 

As the Structural Engineer Intern, you will be a vital member of the LeMar Engineering team and designing high-quality structural products for our customers.

What You Will Do:

  • Explore and develop ideas for updating or enhancing current structural product lines.
  • Update sample calculations for structural product lines.
  • Design and build tools to enhance efficiency and speed of project estimating, quoting, and design processes.
  • Learn how to apply building codes such as ASCE 7, IBC, OSHA 1910, etc. 
  • Gain real world experience calculating structural loads and strengths of steel members & connections, reading and interpreting structural drawings, and validating weld details, dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Observe and learn from steel fabrication process – taking engineered designs and following them through production. 

Position Requirements:

  • Education: Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with an interest in Structural Engineering. 
  • Experience: Some structural analysis & design experience helpful.
  • Certification(s): n/a
  • Functional Skills: Completion of an Engineering Statics course; Structural Steel Design I is a plus. 
  • Technology Aptitude/Skills: Proficient with MS Excel; Previous use of CAD drawing software preferred. 
  • Language Skills: Solid verbal and written communication skills.

Other Important Information:     

Reports To: Engineering Manager

Core Hours: 7:30a-4:00p (schedule somewhat flexible – will work roughly 8 hours within that timeframe)

Typical Work Week: Monday-Friday

Work Conditions: Office and manufacturing/fabrication environment

Travel: Potential visits to customer job sites
