Financial Litigation Program (FLP) Financial/Accounting Intern
The mission of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan is to uphold the rule of law, to keep the district safe, and to protect civil rights. The Criminal Division is primarily responsible for prosecuting federal crimes from acts of terrorism to public corruption, white-collar crime, organized crime and drug trafficking, internet-related crimes, and many other criminal acts. Through its Civil Division, the Office is charged with enforcing federal civil rights and environmental laws, defending agencies of the United States, and recovering funds from violators of U.S. criminal, regulatory, and civil laws.
The Financial Litigation Program Volunteer Student Intern will join the office’s Financial Litigation Program (FLP). As part of the criminal justice process, the court may assess criminal monetary penalties, including victim restitution, against defendants. The FLP performs investigations into assets and asset tracing, as well as the litigation, and collection function for these penalties, with victim restitution receiving the highest priority. The intern may develop, analyze, and evaluate information regarding debts or a debtor’s financial assets, make recommendations for further investigative action, draft routine documents regarding the FLP function, and enter and track financial data in systems and spreadsheets.
