Mechanical Engineering Intern

Project Overview

Energy Efficiency Investments (EEI) is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support the engineering team in evaluating, designing, and analyzing mechanical systems within our energy performance contracting projects. This internship provides hands-on experience related to HVAC systems, energy modeling, field assessments, and project implementation.

Interns will work alongside experienced engineers to help develop energy-saving solutions, assist with design documentation, and participate in the technical aspects of project delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist with field surveys and assessments of HVAC, mechanical, and building systems

Support the development of energy models and engineering calculations

Help prepare technical documentation, equipment schedules, and design sketches

Compile and analyze data related to building performance, system efficiencies, and utility usage

Work with engineers to develop project scopes, mechanical solutions, and cost estimates

Review drawings, specifications, and equipment submittals

Assist with commissioning activities, equipment verification, and system testing

Participate in project meetings and technical discussions

Support the preparation of proposals, reports, and construction documents

Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and subcontractors

Qualifications:

Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Systems Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a related field

GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills

Understanding of HVAC fundamentals, thermodynamics, or fluid mechanics

Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or energy modeling software is a plus

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications

Strong communication skills and the ability to work in team environments

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for site visits

Learning Outcomes:

Hands-on experience evaluating and designing HVAC and mechanical systems

Exposure to energy modeling, system diagnostics, and efficiency analysis

Understanding of energy performance contracting and design-build delivery

Training opportunities with engineering software, data tools, and field instruments
